Bears lose to Chiefs.

Again, it's the first preseason game so you can't put much stock into anything. Teams typically run very basic, vanilla type of plays just to get their teams used to game situations and they don't want to show what they will pull out in the regular season.

Still, the Bears have some concerns. Their first round pick that was supposed to anchor the left side of the line had surgery on a herniated disk in his back and is out indefinitely. Terrence Metcalf is out as well having arthroscopic surgery. John Tait who was supposed to move over to RT with the signing of Chris Williams looks like he is headed back to LT. Now the Bears are looking to resign some of the O linemen they cut from last year in a desperate effort to get some semblance of a line put together. They are trying to resign old guys that were terrible last year. That is how desperate they are.

Also, neither of their QBs made a case for themselves as starters. I didn't see the game but from the highlights, the numbers, and what I have read, neither one of them separated themselves. Orton seemed to manage the game pretty well but stalled a decent drive by inexplicably fumbling while scrambling forcing the Bears to go for a FG. Meanwhile, Grossman, booed often at Soldier Field since the Bears drafted him in the first round in 2003, was greeted with near-silence when he trotted onto the field late in the first half. The jeers came on the opening drive of the second half when he threw an incompletion to finish a drive that went nowhere. He finished 4-8 for 44 yards with most of the yards coming off of a short pass to Garret Wolfe who turned it into a 25 yard TD.

We'll see if they can pull themselves together but they got a long way to go if they expect to compete with the Colts on opening night.

BTW - regarding RobsObs claim that the Bears QBs are fine and passed for more yardage than the Skins. I put my reply to that in the other subject post if he cares to read it.

It is the first preseason game. They played fine. I don't see any reason to worry at this point. Rex had a TD pass (he is my choice). Kyle managed just fine - as you pointed out. Lovie sees the guys every day and I am comfortable that he will choose the man who gives them the best chance to win.

The O-line is going to have to gel. Too bad about Williams - it happens. Metcalf is supposed to be back and the other young guys seem to be having a decent camp. I'm sure they will figure it out, come together and improve on last year.

I am also comfortable that the Bears D will be way, way, way better than last year.

FYI, I posted my response to your QB thing.

I suppose they played OK. The issue with the QBs is that neither one of them is separating themselves. The only thing Rexy has been consistent at is his inconsistency. Apparently he has been inconsistent throughout camp drawing loud boos from fans. His TD pass to Wolfe was all Wolfe. It was a short dump off that Wolfe ran for 20 yards and the TD. Sure, it counted as a TD statistically for Rexy and good for him. However, that play was the bulk of his passing yards. For the third year now all I am saying is that Rexy needs to show consistency.

You clearly recognize the issues with the O line from last year. They are trying to bring back the same old men from last year as a result of the injuries to their younger projected starters for this year. My guess is that they will continue to struggle on the O line from. You can pray that they gel. My guess is that they won't. Given that the O line will most likely struggle, it will be difficult for them to do well with a rookie RB, brand new WR corps, and not knowing who the QB is. I am not trying to come down on the Bears. You claim to be objective so with all of the issues they are going to have to overcome it would seem to me that you too would realize that they are in rebuilding mode and going to have issues -- at least on the offensive front.

They better pray that their defense picks it back up. Personally, I don't think they will be as good as they were two years ago. Hopefully they will be better than they were last year and can finish somewhere in the middle to help that team.

Once again, Devin Hester will have to carry that team in the KR/PR position.
