Band Aid song

Again, now that the holiday music is being played on the radio, I have another song that I find amusing.

I think we all know the Band Aid song back from the '80s. It is a compilation of European artists singing a song to help hunger in Africa. It is basically the British version of We Are the World. It's a pretty good song but there is one part in there that always makes me chuckle. It's Bono's part. Now U2 may very well be my most favorite band so I am a Bono fan as well. However, in the song, Bono's part is, "Well, tonight thank God it's them instead of you!"

I chuckle because I am not sure why I would thank God that people in Africa are suffering. I get what is intended by the words. I am sure it is meant that we should just be thankful that we aren't suffering. Still, seems like they could have chosen some better words. Anyway, just something else I find amusing/interesting about a holiday song and I find it amusing/interesting every year.

I remember that this was always a point of contention for JKSD. The funny thing is that they also recast the song again 20 years later with largely different signers, but Bono had the same part. As you know JKSD, Bono has dedicated a great deal of his time and resources to providing relief to various African countries. Perhaps he feels bad for singing those words. Atleast he didn't sing the Boy George part.

Tangent: I actually much prefer another song that Bono and the Edge wrote about South Africa called "Silver and Gold". This song has quite an edge and the live versions are awesome.

Yes, that is a good song. Again, I know what is intended in the Band Aid song but I still chuckle every time I hear those words.
