Rex in Effect!

Rex is the man. He wins the starting job over Becks. Funny because as critical as I was of Rex while he was with the Pears, I was pulling for him here in D.C. It's not so much that I love Rexy but more that I don't really care for Becks.

I do believe Rexy gives us the better chance to win as he seems more capable, he has been a starter in the league and has experience, he has been in the system longer, and very importantly he is backed by his teammates. I'm actually very interested in watching the guy play. There is no question he has talent. I have maintained that position even when he was with the Pears. The real question is can he be consistent. It's not that he makes mistakes. It's that his mistakes are very bad (throwing an INT into double or triple coverage, fumbling and bumbling snaps, etc.). He also needs to have better pocket awareness. A guy like him needs to be able to feel when the pocket is collapsing and either take the sack or throw the ball away. This is where he gets into trouble. Hopefully he has learned from his mistakes and has grown into a better QB.

I liked what I saw of him in preseason and I am really looking forward to the game and his play on Sunday. It's a great game for him to show what he has. It's a divisional game at home and a marquee match at 4 pm. It's also the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and it's NY vs. Washington. It's going to be fun and like I always said before when Rexy played, whether he is good or bad, he is going to make for a great story. He really has a chance to win or lose this crowd and hopefully for him and the Skins, he does well.

The other interesting part of his selection as starter is this is pretty much the last opportunity he will get to be a starter. We brought him back this season on a one year, lower salaried contract. The guy is 30 years old. If he proves himself, he will be the starter for the next couple of years and he will get a multi year/multi million dollar contract. He understands that. If he struggles, he will pretty much relegate himself to a journeyman, career backup. Again, he makes for a great story.

HAIL SKINS!!!!

The choice of Rex almost makes me want to root for the Deadskins. But I will just hope the Deadskins lose every week 38-35 or 31-28.

Rex is a far better choice in my opionion. He has the arm and the confidence (and ability to deal with criticism) to be successful. But I really think his teammates love him.

When Shanny announced to the team that Rex had beat out Beck there was applause and cheering - I'm not sure that Beck would have gotten the same reaction.

Heard Tim Hightower speak yesterday and he genuinely seemed excited that Rex was the guy. Again, you cannot minimize the factor of Rexy having the confidence of his teammates. I think he does a great job of making his teammates believe. I'm excited to see what he can do.

I was pulling for Becksy, not Rexy, because of the overall status of the team. If we're rebuilding, why rebuild with a 9 year vet instead of the unknown quantity? Rexy starting didn't make sense.

It seems now that Shanny must think we're in better shape than anyone originally thought. The D looks faster. The RB situation seems to be much improved. The WRs seem more capable of succeeding. The O-line still seems a bit weak, but it seems that we've filled a bunch of other gaping holes. Why not try to win as many games as possible then?

Rexy proved to be the more steady during the preseason. Also, as you've mentioned, the support his teammates show him cannot be understated. Becksy definitely has the edge in athleticism, but decision making is always an issue with less experienced QBs. He was put into a few situations where throwing the ball away was the correct option and he failed to do so...I'm sure this ruffled Shanny's feathers a bit.

I am fully behind the decision to go with Rexy. Hail Skins!

We will probably see Becksy at some point this season. He will get his chance. I just don't think that much of him.

I think Rexy will do alright. Mistakes will happen just don't make the boneheaded ones that we have become accustomed to with Rex.

Rex is only 30. He can play for 5-6 more years.

As a teammate, would you want the 30 year old who has never really played or the guy who played in the Super Bowl?

Frankly, Rex has always endeared himself to his teammates. He is a leader and has natural skills leading a football team.

He does have natural skills leading a football team. Unfortunately he also has the natural skills to make the boneheaded play.

If he minimizes/eliminates that, he could fulfill his destiny and be a very good QB in this league.

As mentioned, he has hit a major crossroads in his career. If he plays well, he will get that bigger contract and become a starter. If he doesn't, he will leave D.C. for some other place and become a veteran backup for lower bucks.

We'll see.

In light of the title of this blog post, perhaps Rex will adopt the Rump Shaker after he throws touchdowns to Santana Moss! (Sorry jksd, don't start a cartoon with you getting stabbed in the back with a pencil.)

No one is doubting his experience and leadership skills. I think it's great that we have a QB that's been to the Super Bowl. The thing with Rexy is what everyone already knows about him. He's not very mobile. He doesn't have the strongest arm. He fumbles when breathed on by opposing defenses. He throws bad picks too frequently. The guy was on pace for 37 turnovers last year. Protecting the ball has always been his issue and that's not going to change.

The reason why Beck makes sense is because he could grow into a QB who doesn't make those mistakes. We won't know if he is that QB unless he plays though.

I'll give Rexy my support. He won the job fair and square. But if we switch gears along the way and go with Beck, I'll be all for that as well.

Beck couldn't do it in Miami or Baltimore. He was sub-par to Rex in pre-season, and apparently was not all that impressive in practice. He is a career NFL backup at best - that is what he is.

Rex on the other hand can win in the NFL.

I've talked numbers a ton of times in the past and won't bother going over them again. The bottom line is that he can deliver for the Deadskins. Beck won't ever deliver.

Agree partially with Robs and Deepie in that Rex won the job fair and square.

Becks couldn't get it done in Miami where he was demoted to 3rd string. He wasn't valued in Baltimore and it didn't take much for us to bring him here and he was beaten out by Rex. Becks is 30 years old so it's not like he is some young gem that has been untapped and there is all this upside to the guy.

It is clear that he is more mobile. However, Rex seems to give us the better opportunity to win. Rex's arm is not bad. The real concern is the pocket presence and not being overly confident in his arm to be able to squeeze it in there. And NO MORE FUMBLES!!!!

To Scott's point, I do hope he adopts the Rump Shaker as opposed the Gator Chomp after TDs. That is reason enough to make him the starter.

As mentioned, I do believe we will see Becks during the season and we'll see what he can do.

You better hope you don't see Beck. First, it means that Rex is hurt or that he was ineffective. Second, with Beck in there you will see how a QB can really blow games.
