Ovie and the Caps

With the NHL season kicking off in about a month, Ovie is in town early to get the Caps ready for another run at the Cup. He actually just signed a large endorsement deal with Bauer and Nike and he looks good.

There were pictures/videos of him a few months back where he looked terrible. Looked like he had a big gut and looked far from being an elite athlete. It was good to see him yesterday in shape and ready to go.

Last season was another disappointment and anything short of the Stanley Cup this season will be failure. The good news is the Caps seemed to have gotten a little better this offseason. The bad news is that other good teams (Philly, TB, and Boston) seem to have gotten better as well.

Looking forward to the Caps kicking it off and Ovie having a better season than last year.

If they don't win this year, they won't win with Ovie. This is it. Honestly, I don't think Ovie is much of a leader and the Caps either need him to lead in the locker room or they need an actual captain who will kick some arse in the locker room.

Ovie is old enough and respected enough and can speak english well enough that he can lead. I believe he understands what's at stake and is more mature that he knows what to do.

They also brought in that dude from Chicago who is a young vocal leader as well.

I gotta believe the team recognizes that the windo is going to close and they have to get this done.

NOW OR NEVER!!!

One of the vets who left (can't remember which one - Hannan or Steckel maybe) talked about what is wrong with the Caps.

He said that there is a 2-tier system that allows some guys to avoid practice (especially in the playoffs). Ovie misses all of these voluntary practices and then other guys like Semin do also. He said it causes some issues in the locker room.

I believe it and think it shows a lack of leadership on Ovie's part. He should demand that guys come in and if nothing else get treatment.

I think Bradley complained that Semin didn't show up in the playoffs.

Didn't hear about Ovie. Don't think anyone can question Ovie's heart and desire.

It is not his heart and his desire. It is his leadership that is in question.

As the captain he needs to kick some butt at times - not just lead by example.

I believe he is vocal. I have seen him being vocal in the HBO 24/7 series they did last year.

He got into that fight in the Rangers game last season when they were in the midst of their slump and getting beaten in the game. He fought, fell to the ground, got up and yelled at his bench to pick it up.

He's a little older now and been in the league several years. He's a vet now and I expect that he understands that his time in the league is limited and if he wants to get the Cup and solidify his own legacy, he is going to have to take on more of that leadership role. I expect to see that this season.
