Caps on a roll

Caps have won three in a row and are 7-1-2 over their last 10 games.  They really look like they are hitting their stride as we near the mid way point of the season.  Interesting because I was listening to Brooks Laich early in the year when they were playing some inconsistent hockey and he said that everyone was still getting used to Trotz and the system and Trotz was getting used the players and the rights lines and that you would have to wait until game 20 or 25 to really see if it was coming together.  Like clockwork, they hit that 20-25 game mark and have been playing much better hockey.  I suppose things are starting to connect and gel for this team.

As good as they have been playing, the teams around them are playing equally as well (Penguins, Islanders, and Rangers).  Every time we get a win, seems like these other teams are also winning so there is no change in the standings.  Tonight is a good matchup as the Caps visit the Rangers.  Both teams are playing well.  Caps are coming off of a win last night and had to pack up and quickly head up to NY for the game tonight so will be interesting to see how they play.  A Caps loss will push the Rangers into third place.  A Caps win creates a bit of separation between the two teams.  I like the way the Caps are playing and I like that they all seem to care about the results on the ice so I expect another good game from them.  Puck drops at 7 pm.  Should be fun.

Skins beat Eagles 27-24

It's been a while since the Skins won so it was nice to see them not quit at the end of the season and spoil a divisional rivals chances of getting to the playoffs.  It also marked the return of RG3.  Pretty exciting game.  Here are some thoughts:

1. RG3.  Solid game.  Thought he was much more decisive and delivered the ball accurately.  The good thing was he actually had a little more time to throw this week as the O line provided some better protection.  He also ran when he needed to and slid to avoid any big hits.  All you can hope is for the guy to learn and it seems like he is doing that.  I do believe a full offseason working hard with Gruden both on the field and in the classroom/film room will help him to better understand the concepts of the offense.

2. Morris solid.  Got some good hard running from him.  Nothing spectacular but was able to get a few good runs in that helped make a difference.

3. Send DJax deep.  Jackson is a great deep threat and for one reason or not we haven't used him as much as we should/could.  Blame can go around to the QB not seeing him, to the O line not protecting long enough, to DBs taking the deep play away.  Still, on Saturday it was good to see RG3 connect with him a couple of times on deeper balls.  He can get over the top of defenses and that is where he is best suited.

4. Bend but don't break defense.  It was clear the defensive strategy was to not allow big plays.  They played more of an umbrella type defense which did take away the deeper plays but allowed for a bunch of underneath stuff particularly to Ertz.  Not sure why we didn't double team Ertz as he ended up with like 15 catches still at least they didn't give up the big play which had hurt them for the last several weeks.  Interesting as they didn't blitz until the Eagles final drive and when they did, Sanchez made his mistake.

5. Penalties crushed the Eagles.  WAY too many penalties taken by the Eagles.  It certainly was a reason for the outcome.

In the end, it may not have been the greatest game played but it was still a win and no one should ever apologize for a victory.  As mentioned, it was good to see them compete and hurt a divisional rival from gettting to the playoffs.

In other news:

1. Packers clinch.  They stumbled last week against the Bills but beat the Bucs to get themselves back into the playoffs.  They along with Seattle are looking like the teams to beat in the NFC.  Home field advantage will be huge in the playoffs.

2. Bears look a little better with Clausen.  Still take the loss but it was a fairly close game.  Still, there will be major overhaul in Chi-town so will be an interesting offseason.

Skins vs. Iggles

Skins are out of the playoff picture but they still have a lot to play for with games against Philly and Dallas as both those teams are fighting for the playoffs.  They are both home games for the Skins and both divisional rivals and we have a chance to play spoiler.  I expect guys to compete.

It also give RG3 another opportunity to show some life and prove that he can be the starting QB going into next season.  There is still a lot to see at this point.

Regarding the game, here are my thoughts:

1. Blitz Sanchez early and often.  He will make mistakes and hopefully we can create some turnovers.  The key to doing this though is making sure to cover McCoy and Sproles for the quick screens.

2. Put RG3 in a position to be successful.  Let him do the rollouts.  Let him get outside of the pocket and let him have some freedom to run.  This is where he thrives.

3. O line?  Who will be playing?  The line isn't great to begin with and there are injuries so will be interesting to see who plays and how well they protect.  Whoever is in there has to do a better job than what they have been doing because this group has been porous the last few weeks.

4. Morris?  Tied to the line, we need to get some semblance of the run game going.  Putting RG3 in 2nd and 3rd and long situations isn't good for anyone.

It should be a fun game.  Looking forward to RG3 playing.  As a side note, I am VERY glad RG3 decided (or was told to) not get on social media.  Think the way he is handling the media is much better.  Glad he learned that.

Jay Cutler benched

Not really surprising as the guy has grossly underperformed this season particularly given the salary he is commanding.  I don't doubt for a second the Bears regret their decision to sign him to the extension they did.  Trestman will be fired at the end of the season and I'm sure Cutler was ticked off with the O coordinator telling the NFL Network that they had buyer's remorse.  Cutler probably started pouting and complaining and Trestman figuring he's done anyway figured lets just go with Clausen.  No doubt there will be big change in Chi-town next season.  Problem is the Bears are stuck with Cutler the next couple of years.

Skins fall to G-men

The only real noteworthy item in this game was the return of RG3.

Thought he played pretty well.  He was very good in the first half but the entire offense sputtered in the second half.

Can't put all the blame on him for the issues.  The already challenged O line was decimated and ended up with Compton, Lavau, Chester, Who Knows, and Polumbus.  There was no time.

I do think that there are times when RG3 is holding on to the ball too long.  He still needs to better understand the concepts of the offense in order to get the ball out quicker.  Still, when he had time, he delivered the ball accurately.  It seemed clear to me that he is the more dynamic QB with the much higher up side.

A couple of other notes:

1. Can someone stop Beckham?  This guy single handedly torched us.  He is a very good WR but we made him look like a perennial all pro.  At some point, they should have done something to take him away.

2. No pressure on Eli.  Just as RG3 struggled with protection, Eli often times had plenty of times to deliver the ball.  If you give even a poor QB time, more often than not, he will be able to complete the pass.

3. Where is the run game?  Morris has struggled all year.  This is an issue.  I imagine it is a combination of scheme, line, and Morris.  Still, it doesn't help our QB (whoever it is) when we are always put into 2nd and 3rd and long.

4. Questions on Gruden.  If you look at the stats, most, if not all, offensive stats have gone down.  Gruden is supposed to be the offensive genius but it just hasn't translated.  The other issue is that he seems to have really botched the QB situation.  From the outside, it appears that there is not direction for this team.  Who is the QB?  Seems like it is hard to establish any consistency for the QB as well as the entire offense when they are constantly being swapped.

5. Special Teams better but still not good.  We need guys that are hungry to make a play get on special teams.  These guys seem too comfortable to be on the roster.  Don't see enough hunger from these guys.

The one good thing was this week there wasn't any new big story that came out.  Final two games are against Philly and Dallas and have big playoff implications for those teams so there is still a lot to play for.  Will be interesting to see how they perform.

Skins shutout at home

Another week and another low.  Just when you thought the Skins hit rock bottom, they find another way to take it one rung down.

Not much to say.  Just beaten in all three phases of the game.

Interesting thing is the McCoy got hurt and it possibly opens the door for RG3 to return.  Not sure why you wouldn't play him.  If you don't think that Colt is the answer, why play him?  Might as well see what you have in RG3.  Curious what the relationship is b/t Gruden and RG3.  I know there have been a number of reports and "multiple sources" have said this and that.  Who knows what the real truth is?  If Gruden thinks that little of RG3 than might as well get rid of him.

My thoughts are there is no point in releasing him UNLESS Gruden just can't get along with him or the team/organization feels that he is too big a distraction to keep around and just don't believe he can play the game.  Might as well keep him and work with him the entire off season and see what he can do.  The guy is 24 years old and if you look at film of him in college or his rookie season you can see he has a ton of talent.  See what you have in him and see if he can get back to a level at or close to where he was.

RG3 benched

Interesting development as Jay Gruden has decided to bench RG3.  Reports say that it does not necessarily mean the end of RG3's career in D.C.  A few thoughts on this:

1. If McCoy struggles, who goes back in?  Seems a little difficult to put RG3 back in there.  On the other hand, it may take some of the pressure off of the guy as people will get their wish of having McCoy in there.

2. RG3 benched himself.  He struggled.  Yes, he didn't have the best help but he certainly didn't do himself any favors.  Was watching the NFL Network this morning and LaVar and Terrell Davis were going over a few plays in which RG3 just did not see wide open receivers that could have gone for big plays.  RG3 is just pressing.  It clearly seems mental.  He just isn't trusting either his arm or the WR.  I'm not saying every play where he misses or checks down or takes a sack there is an open receiver but I imagine there are a lot of plays/points being left on the field because of his inability to make the right throw.

3. Where does he go from here?  This is an interesting question because the Skins have left the door open.  He has the physical tools to be successful.  Coming out of college, he showed that he could make every throw needed in an NFL system.  He thrived his rookie year in an offense that was built around his abilities.  Since that rookie season, he has struggled for a variety of reasons.  I think he needs to get his head right and get the pressure off of him and may very well need a clean slate (new team) to jump start his career.  The question is that in year three and after as many starts as he has had, it is a little difficult to understand his inability to read defenses and go through progressions.  TD of the NFL Network seemed to agree with this and that if he can't do it now, he can't see him learning it well enough to become a franchise QB.

In any event, RG3's career is at a crossroads.  He will get another chance no question - whether it is in D.C. or some where else.  We'll see what he does with it.  Seems like the guy is bright and is willing to work hard.  I think he will have a chip on his shoulder.  Question is can he put it all together in a positive way and return to be a quality QB.  Time will tell.

RG3 sacks

So RG3 will inevitably get much of the blame for the offensive woes and for holding on to the ball and everything else.  I am not excusing his performance entirely.  No question he has to improve but to place full blame on him is silly.  In looking at the sacks he took against SF, he just didn't have much time to release the ball.  Here are the times from snap to sack:

3.7 seconds—On the first one, which came on the second play of the game, Griffin kept his eyes downfield. Rookie left tackle Morgan Moses fended off Aldon Smith for as long as could reasonably expected. Even then Griffin may have had a little more time but he drifted back and right into Smith’s path.

2.54 seconds—On third and nine Griffin dropped back from under center. Ray McDonald was lined up over Moses but he stunted, getting past Shawn Lauvao and then Kory Lichtensteiger. Maybe Griffin had time to get rid of the ball but he appeared to be looking downfield and McDonald was in his face in a hurry.

2.75 seconds—This was another third-down sack, this one with six to go in 49ers territory. Smith got past Moses, who probably should have had some help on the play, very quickly and got Griffin from the blind side.

6.9 seconds—This was the second play the Redskins first drive after they went down 17-13 in the fourth quarter. Griffin looked and started to scramble before being brought down for a loss of three by Aaron Lynch. It didn’t look like any receiver was open but maybe the all-22 will reveal someone that Griffin should have been able to hit.

2.4 seconds—This was in the final, desperation drive. End Justin Smith lined up wide on the right side, went around Moses, and blindsided Griffin, knocking the ball out.

For the record, he was sacked one other time in 2.1 seconds but that was negated on a roughing the passer penalty on Lynch.

Conversely, watching the Dallas/NY Giants game, Collinsworth and Michaels kept on talking about the Cowboy O line and how much time they were giving Romo to throw.  On the Cowboy game winning drive, Romo had all day to throw.  They even did some replays with a stopwatch in the corner of the screen showing multiple plays where Romo had 7-8 seconds to throw.  Give a QB, that much time and any QB should be able to complete a pass.

Again, not excusing RG3 entirely but it's clear he needs some help.

Skins fall to 9ers 17-13

Skins hung in there but couldn't pull it out.  Just a few thoughts:

1. Defense was good.  As bad as they were the last couple of weeks, they deserve credit for keeping the game close.  They got three turnovers and the secondary was solid particularly with all the injuries (D. Hall, Amerson, Porter, Biggers).  They were down to some guy named Ducre who I had never heard of who ended up getting an INT.  The only problem with this group was when it came time to get a stop near the end of the game they couldn't do it.  That's the difference between good teams and bad teams.

2. Morris.  Guy had his first 100+ yard rushing game.  He was strong the entire game.  He was able to cut back and make people miss and also break through tackles to extend runs.  Looked more like the guy we are used to seeing the last couple of years.

3. RG3. Not that great.  Wasn't terrible.  I get that he will get the bulk of the blame but he didn't get much time.  Still, I won't excuse his play.  He has to get more comfortable and make some plays.  Not every play will be ideal and the great QBs can still overcome and make plays.  Generating only a little over 100 yards of passing offense is not good enough.  However, this truly is a combination of his play, the O line not protecting, and play calling.

4. O line.  It's a banged up O line with their best starter out and a rookie replacing him.  It was a tough assignment for Morgan and there was more than one occasion where he just whiffed resulting in a sack/pressure.  Just not good enough.

5. Special teams.  WAY too many penalties that were just costly.  They would have been good if not for the penalties.

Not a whole lot more to be said.  At this point, really need to see what we have in RG3.  This game was shaping up almost perfectly for him to silence his critics as he got the ball back with three minutes left down by four points.  He wasn't able to generate anything.  Again, it's not all on him but he certainly isn't excused for this.  Great QBs somehow shine in these moments.  Also, just someone on the entire team needed to make a play whether it was offense or defense or special teams and no one could come up with that late last play to put the game away.  Good teams seem to find a way to make that play and we just aren't good enough to make that play.

It will be another week of RG3 discussion and then on to Indy next week.

Caps vs. Avs tonight

Caps are looking to take two of three on their road trip tonight against the Avs.  Varly is hurt so not sure if he will be playing.  For the most part, I like the way the Caps play.  The only thing is that every game is decided by one goal.  Sure would be nice to have them be able to put a team away.  Still, I'll take a win anyway they can get one.

Jordan Zimmerman's gift to Steven Souza

Jordan Zimmermann said he would buy something for Steven Souza, Jr. after the rookie's incredible catch to seal his no-hitter on the final day of the regular season. On Wednesday, we found it what it was.

According to MLB.com, Zimmermann bought Souza a gift card to Best Buy that doubled as a housewarming gift.

A GIFT CARD?!!!!  Actually, I'm sure it was for a fair amount.  Souza declined to say how much the gift certificate was worth, but the present from Zimmermann helped Souza out big time.

ESPN Power Rankings - Week 12

Skins: #29 - down 3 spots
Pears: #23 - up 4 spots
Puckers: #3 - up 2 spots
Iggles: #8 - down 4 spots

Still lots of football left and many things can change.

Pressure is on RG3 and the clock has started.  He is on a six game tryout.

Trestman may be coaching his last six games for the Pears and Cutler needs to prove his is worth something near to what he is being paid.

Rodgers and the Puckers are on fire and been putting up ridiculous numbers the last couple of weeks.  Can they continue?

Sanchez is driving the Iggles.  Question is will he drive them off a cliff?

RG3

The guy is facing probably the most pressure and adversity he has ever faced in his life in terms of his football career and abilities.  Coming off of a lackluster performance followed by comments that give the impression he was throwing his team under the bus have resulted in him being slammed by critics.

It's great material for the media.  My own thoughts are that it wasn't a great performance.  He was not good.  However, the team was not good.  I won't deflect blame from him as he is the QB and more attention will go to him and more expectations are on him as the QB and a guy that was expected to be great and a guy that has been treated like a star without proving much.  Still, we need to put things in perspective.  None of us know what he is doing in practice.  If he isn't performing there that's a bigger problem.  All we see is game day.  TB was one game.  He has six more games to prove he is a franchise QB.  It's on him.  Gruden was very critical of him in Monday's press conference mentioning that his fundamentals and footwork needed work.  He also mentioned that RG3 is receptive in listening and works hard so lets see if he progresses.  The clock is on and RG3 needs to show something.  Will be interesting to see how he handles these next six games.

On another front, RG3 spoke after the game and some of his comments were twisted to make it sound like he was throwing his teammates under the bus.  Anyone that watched the comments would understand that that was not the case.  He accepted blame and his message was that everyone in the locker room was together and understood the situation and that everything is going bad and everyone needs to step up and improve starting with himself.  He was not deflecting blame nor was he ever comparing himself to Rodgers or Manning or anyone else.  He was saying that no one can do it on their own and that football is a team sport and everyone needs to contribute.  THAT SAID, RG3 should not have said any of this.  I understand that he wasn't trying to disparage anyone or throw anyone under the bus but Jay Gruden cleared it up yesterday saying that RG3 should just talk about himself and not anyone/anything else.  That is his job as the coach to discuss those things.  Gruden had some meetings yesterday morning to clear the air recognizing how media/social media can take the words and spin them up and then it can get out of control.  He said that they have to deal with those things in house.  It's unfortunate because it creates unnecessary drama.  Again, I don't doubt for a minute that RG3 did not intend to disparage anyone.  He was trying to rally his team and said that he would battle with the guys in the locker room any time but things get twisted and it ends up having the opposite effect than what he intended.  It's too bad but it is on him for talking too much.  Just as he needs to learn his craft on the field, he needs to understand what the media does and their role and that it's best to just keep things simple and focused on himself.  He has had a few brushes like this now and hopefully he is aware to just be quiet.

In the end, people are really starting to turn on RG3 and the Skins.  It's a pretty critical time for him and this team.  For me, I don't much care for wins at this point.  Playoffs aren't even a consideration.  What we need to see is progress and improvement -- week to week.  We need to find out if RG3 is going to be part of the future as well as some other young guys.  I would be most interested in finding about Morgan Moses, Spencer Long, and Phillip Thomas as all these guys are young, drafted pretty high, and would fill major gaps that this team has.  Also, calls for McCoy or Cousins are silly.  McCoy is a journeyman that was picked up off of the scrap heap.  There is a reason for that.  Cousins had his chance and loved throwing INTs almost as much as Cutler.  These next six games are a tryout for RG3 to prove he can be that guy.

Wednesday is media day in the locker room so you can bet there will be much more stuff to be talked about this week.

This is how I feel about the Skins...

I support them.  I stick up for them.  They can't even beat the Bucs at home!  Yeah, imagine me as Cerrano and Jobu is the Redskins.

Skins crushed by Bucs -- PATHETIC!!!!

I could go off on this game but it's not worth it.  It was a total team FAILURE!!!  It's sickening!

In other relevant NFL news:

1. Pears get a nice win.  Jeff Cutler silenced critics for at least another week as they fended off the Viqueens for a divisional win.

2. For the second week in a row, the Puckers thrash their opponent.  This time it was the Iggles.  Their offense looks unstoppable and they are able to put some pressure on the QB.  Sanchez looks like what we thought he was.  Highly doubt he went out for a cheesesteak when he got back to Philly.

3. Amazing that at 4-6, the Falcones are leading that division.  Even more amazing is that at 2-8, the Bucs are not out of it.

Right now, looks like the Cardinals (even without Palmer) and the Puckers have to be considered front runners in the NFC.  However, things can change from week to week.

Skins vs. Bucs preview

Skins should be well rested coming off of a bye week.  They get the 1-8 Bucs at home on Sunday.  With playoffs seemingly out of the equation at this point, the shift goes to evaluating players none more so than RG3.  The staff needs to find out if he is the guy moving forward.  Here are a couple of thoughts on the game:

1. RG3:  He needs to step up.  He was decent in the last game against the Viqueens.  He had two bad throws at critical moments that tarnished the effort but having missed nearly the entire season, I was pleased with the way he played against a pretty tough Minnesota defense on the road.  He'll be back at home this week and I almost feel like there is more pressure on him this week than last week.  He can silence the critics with a good game.  I think he's going to be fine.  People will want perfection but he needs to just play his game.  If he makes a mistake, needs to shrug it off and move on.  I just want to see improvement from week to week.  I expect to see him have a solid game this week.

2. Defense/Haslett:  This group was tremendously disappointing against Minnesota particularly coming off of a very strong game against Dallas.  My thoughts are just blitz.  Don't send the house but disguise blitzes and have them come from different people at different times.  We blitzed 60% of the plays in Dallas.  It worked.  Former Redskin and current Cardinal DC Todd Bowles who is able to field a very good defense despite of a number of injuries to key players blitzes 40+% of the time.  It works.  You just have to be smart about it.  Put the pressure on McCown.  Make him cry again.

3. Return of Cofield and Hankerson:  Cofield should help on the D line so it will be good to get him back as he will make his season debut on Sunday.  Same for Hankerson.  Would like to see him get in some in place of Roberts who has been pretty disappointing this year.  Roberts has dropped a fair number of balls.  Would like to see what Hank can do.

Not much more to say on this one.  Tampa Bay has talent on their team but they are still 1-8 so, again, playoffs aren't much of a thought for the Skins but this is a must win game for them in terms of not allowing a 1-8 team come to DC and win.  It's also important for a number of individual players to step up and have a good showing particularly RG3.  I expect the Skins to be hungry and play with a chip on their shoulders. I expect a Skins win 27-17.

In other relevant news, the Iggles will visit the frozen tundra of GB in what should be a pretty good game.  I think Sanchize will struggle with the cold and some pressure and will have a couple of turnovers.  Rodgers is the much more confident and talented QB and will pick the Philly defense apart.  If the Iggles have a chance, it will be to get McCoy, who has been largely disappointing all year, going. That and quick screens to Sproles and Maclin and let them do the work.  If Dirty Sanchez has to play from behind and make plays, he'll make plays...bad ones.  GB should win this one 31-24.

Shanny to the Pears?

As the Chicago Bears season unravels, the team has given up more than 50 points in back to back games, rumors are growing that Shanahan could take over the Bears if the team fires coach Marc Trestman. Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk expanded on the idea:
Why not Shanahan? He’s an Oak Park, Illinois native who played at Eastern Illinois. He led the Broncos to a pair of Super Bowl wins. And he somehow managed to take an inherently dysfunctional Washington franchise to the postseason in 2012.
Shanahan has connections to the Bears two-highest profile players, QB Jay Cutler and WR Brandon Marshall. In fact, Shanahan drafted both while he was in Denver.

Shanny is more of a no nonsense guy which Chicago needs and he does know a couple of their star players.  Still, he's an arse and a control freak and has no problem rail roading his team/organization if things don't go his way.  I think he is a decent coach but can do without his antics.

ESPN Power Rankings - Week 11

Skins - #26 - had the bye week so no change.
Pears - #27 - down six spots as they got pummeled giving up 50+ points for the second straight game.
Puckers - #5 - up three spots as they looked like they could have put up 80 points on the Pears.
Iggles - #4 - no change. Beat up a disappointing Carolina team where Cam looked like he was stoned.

About right.  Big game this week with the Puckers facing the Iggles.  Should give us some idea about how good these teams really are.

Caps go for three in a row tonight

I've watched pretty much every Caps game so far this year and there really has only been one or two games where they didn't look good.  They have been in every game this year with nearly all of their games being decided by one goal (occasionally there may be a two goal differential because of an empty netter).

I like the style of their play.  There is a clear difference from last season as it is very much all five guys have to be two way players.  It still looks clunky at times as I think guys are getting used to the system and Trotz is mixing and matching lines.  Still, it seems like it is coming together and the Caps have put together back to back wins over the past weekend.  They look to make it three in a row tonight against a struggling Blue Jacket team.  Hopefully they can get on a bit of a tear as the Metropolitan division is very jumbled with several teams jockeying for second through sixth place (Pittsburgh has separated themselves in first).

Looking forward to the game and hopefully we can keep the modest win streak going.

Puckers pummel Pears

Enjoy the Trestman era while it lasts because it isn't going to last much longer.

Last night the Puckers spanked the Pears building a 42-0 lead at HALF TIME!  I'm sure they could have put up another 20-30 points in the second half but dialed it down and let starters rest.  The Pears are in utter disarray.  Here are just a few of their problems:

1. Jeff Cutler:  The guy is getting paid like a top flite QB and producing like a second (or even a third) stringer.  His indifference is bothersome too.  On the INT that bounced off of Long's head and was returned for a pick six, George made little effort to try and catch him.  Yes, the game was out of reach.  Yes, George probably wasn't going to catch him.  However, as a "leader" of the team, show some pride.  He quit on that play.  I'm sure there are plenty of guys on that team that don't believe they can win with Jay George.

2. Trestman: He's lost control of the team.  Back to back games of giving up 50+ points.  Show some pride.  He looks like a guy that has lost control.  He looks overmatched.  Trestman seems like a good coordinator and maybe a good head coach in the CFL or a small time program but he doesn't look like a guy that can get it done in the NFL particularly in a large market like Chicago.  His time is done.

3. Defense is offensive:  Apparently tackling is optional for this group.  On Lacy's long run off of the screen for a TD, the defenders didn't look like they even wanted to try and tackle him.  Just poor effort.  Hate to see that.  D Coordinator Mel Tucker should be fired immediately.

4. Too much talent on the offense to not be scoring:  With guys like Marshall, Jefferey, Forte, Bennett, they should be putting up some points.  I don't think anyone thought the defense was going to be great this year.  The strength was the offense but they too are struggling.  Trestman was brought in to help foster the offense and take them to another level.  I suppose he did get them to another level...another level of suckiness.  This group is a disappointment.

Just a slew of other problems:

- No identity.
- No control.
- Aging vets (Briggs, Tillman).
- GM sucks

In the end, they are going to have to blow this up and start over (new coach, new GM, new players).  It's going to take a couple of years before the Pears get competitive.

As far as the Puckers, they are hitting their stride.  They should have a tougher test next week against the Iggles but they are looking formidable.  Rodgers is looking like the elite QB that he is and they have several weapons on offense.  If their defense can solidify, they will be tough to beat.

In other league news:

1. Feel terrible for Carson Palmer and Arizona:  It's looking like Palmer may have suffered an ACL injury.  This is tough for Palmer in that he was having a solid year and he doesn't have too many years left.  It's extra tough given that AZ had the best record in the NFL and it's going to be difficult to lose their starting QB.  Injuries are part of the game and teams have to do their best to backfill.

2. Skins had a bye week and get back to work today in preparation for TB.  Frankly, the Skins better beat the Bucs at home.  If we don't, I may just have to start considering denouncing the Skins.

3. Iggles play tonight in the start of the Dirty Sanchez era.  The Iggles weren't thrilled with Foles anyways and seemed to be pondering sitting him so the injury may not be such a bad thing.  I'm sure Sanchez is happy to get back to being a starter so we'll see how he does with a fresh start on a new team.  It's MNF so it's a national stage but they are playing a disappointing Carolina team so he should be okay.

4. Seattle seems to have bounced back.  A much needed win for them against the Giants.  Lynch was truly a beast with FOUR TDs.

Another week and another set of stories.  Still a lot of football left to be played and I'm sure there will still be more great stories to come.

"Amateurish" jounalism - part trois

SI did a piece on the "amateurish" journalism done by McHenry.  It is an independent piece with Post reporter Jason Reid being interviewed for much of it.  Anyone that has read and listened to Reid on JFK knows he has been very critical of the Skins over the years so I don't think he can be counted on as a "homer" or anything.

McHenry has her perception of things and perceived the disruption to be a revolt against RG3.  Reid mentions that players would not do something so public if they truly felt that way towards their QB.  He also mentioned that McHenry is not close enough to understand the Skins locker room and if she had any questions, he would have been happy to have helped her out.  All the report did was to create more of an unnecessary distraction and doesn't do anyone any good.  I suppose except for McHenry who has gotten a heck more play than she ever has in her career.

Caps thoughts

Caps are trying to end a 4 game skid tonight against Calgary.  After the last game, Trotz had had enough and was fairly critical of the Caps and the same mistakes that are plaguing them (bad penalties and costly turnovers in their zone).  He seems very much about accountability and indicated there could be changes.

For me, I have enjoyed watching the Caps this year.  The mistakes are frustrating but it's clear there is much better play from this team.  Stats point out that after the first 10 games this year, we have outshot the opponents in 8 of those 10 games - compared to only 3 out of 10 last year.  Also, we have given up around 80 shots less than a year ago after 10 games.  This is proof showing the difference in play.  There is a real commitment to playing two way hockey.  Offensive players need to get back on defense and defenders are expected to engage in offensive runs and create chances.

I like the play but again the mistakes are frustrating and costly.  Heard Brooks Laich a few days back and he mentioned how different it is under Trotz (in a good way) and that the team is still settling into the new system and how Trotz is still figuring out line combinations.  He mentioned that things should start to settle down at game 20 or 30.  We'll see if this is the case.  Again, I like the style of play and we are competing but we need to start winning.

One thing that has been really bugging me is the trade McPhee made for Erat.  He gave up our top pick in Filip Forsberg who at 20 years old is already showing signs of becoming a quality player in Nashville.  Erat was a malcontent that isn't even on the team anymore so we basically got Latta out of that trade.  It's clear who got the better end BY FAR out of that trade.

"Amateurish" journalism part deaux

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/wp/2014/11/02/jay-gruden-vehemently-denies-report-by-espns-britt-mchenry/

This sheds some light on the "amateurish" story written by McHenry.  People want gossip and negativity and that's what sells but McHenry either was knowlingly fabricating this story or she just didn't get it.

What's worse is that the Redskins people asked the journalists to keep the incident in house so that the Skins could deal with the individuals themselves (to think that this is unique to the Skins is also silly) but McHenry chose to disregard that message and not only put the story out there but do it inaccurately.

Media is given the right to meet with players but they should do so responsibly.  It's a shame when trust is broken.  Frankly, this is why I hate most of these "reports" because you never know what to believe.  Things can be taken out of context or it's one person's perception of what was said.  I know I have said things and thought I was trying to convey a certain message only to find out that the person I was speaking to took it completely different than what I intended.

Whatever.  It's too bad this story even came out but that's the nature of media/social media.

Redskins in bus crash on way to game

Original reports were that it was a fairly minor accident.  It turns out it could have been a lot worse than people thought.  From Brian McNally of WJFK, apparently it was the police escort that missed the exit and then tried to over correct and cut in front of the first bus to make the exit causing the bus to avoid the cruiser, slamming on the brakes, getting hit from behind by the second bus, and hitting the guard rail.  Fortunately, the bus did not break through the guard rail as they could have gone over an embankment and on to a highway where it could have been a much more serious if not catastrophic accident.

McNally reported that RG3 did fly around the bus on impact as did I believe it was Ryan Clark.  Stephen Bowen apparently was in the back cursing loudly as he thought he had re injured his knee.  Some of the players mentioned that they had never been so scared in their life.

Again, the good news is that no one was seriously hurt but this certainly could have been a much much worse accident.

"Amateurish" journalism

So there was a report from ESPN's Britt McHenry reported last week that RG3 had alienated himself from the team so much so that during an interview in the locker room last week, about a dozen players interrupted the session in protest so much so that the interview had to be moved to the hallways.  McHenry indicated that the players interruption was a result of their feelings towards RG3.

McHenry is a young woman who used to report for WUSA in D.C.  She is fairly new to ESPN and I'm sure she is trying to promote herself and probably thought her report would get her noticed.  It did but it has since become clear the report was inaccurate.

Yes, there was a disruption during RG3's interview but it had nothing to do with RG3.  Was listening to Brian McNally (the beat reporter for WJFK) and he said that he is friend's with McHenry and thought the report was accurate in that there was a disruption but completely disagreed with McHenry in that in had anything to do with RG3.  From McNally's standpoint and everyone else he talked to, they felt the players had no issue with RG3.  McNally mentioned that the players yelling were immature and some thought it was a prank and others were genuinely bothered by the media and some of their reporting and were voicing their displeasure.

Was trying to find McHenry's report on ESPN today and it appears that it has been removed.

It's this type of nonsense that causes hysteria.  Silly fans will automatically buy into it and it causes unnecessary distractions.

McNally also reported that the Skins were embarrassed by the players yelling and asked the media to not report about it indicating that those individuals would be dealt with in house.  McHenry apparently felt like she should report on it.  I have a feeling McHenry won't be covering the Skins any more and if she does, she will certainly have a hard time at Redskins Park from players and management alike.

Skins fall to Vikings 29-26

Disappointing.  Makes the win over Dallas pretty meaningless.  They had a chance to string three wins in a row and go into the bye week feeling pretty good.  Instead, it leaves a sour taste in their mouths that they couldn't get the job done.  Here are my thoughts:

1. RG3.  Wasn't perfect but given that the guy has missed nearly the entire season, I was happy with the way he played.  I know everyone is giving him grief for the INT before the half that led to the Vikings first score.  However, I put this as much on the play call as I do on RG3.  The Skins were up 10-0 and had just stopped the Vikings on a 4th and 2.  We get the ball back around our 35 yard line with just over a minute left.  I would have been content with the 10-0 lead and having all the momentum.  I get that there was time to get an additional score.  However, if you are going to go for it, call a VERY high percentage play.  Call a bubble screen or a regular screen or a draw play...anything that is VERY high percentage and if you get some significant yardage they can proceed with trying to get more points on the board.  They called an out pattern that is no guarantee.  Obviously, the pass sucked and RG3 would be the first to admit to that but the play call should have been much more conservative in that situation.  Still, other than that play, I was fine with his play.  He made some really nice throws and did a good job of eluding pressure which was on him much of the day.  He led a great drive late in the game when the Skins were down 21-20 to take back the lead 26-21.  He certainly is not the reason why we lost.

2. Morris.  Thought he had a strong game.  For the first time all season, he looked more like the Morris we are used to seeing.  I'm sure part of this is a direct result of having RG3 back.  Hopefully we see more of this Morris moving forward.

3. Desean Jackson has been worth it.  The guy is a playmaker.  He is not going to get a ton of balls thrown his way but he will get big yards when it is thrown his way.  He is good for 2-3 long balls each game and getting him balls in space is dangerous for opposing defenses as he is small and quick enough to elude guys.

4. Defense SUCKED!!!!  Giving up four TDs on the Vikings last five offensive drives is INEXCUSABLE.  I gave Haslett and company credit last week for doing a great job against Dallas but this week he was terrible.  They let a rookie QB who is one of the lowest rated in the NFL pick us apart.  The Skins put up 26 points against a solid defense.  That should be enough to win that game but the defense couldn't get it done.  Don't understand why we couldn't get pressure on Bridgewater.  I do chalk up a lot of this to coaching.  He just didn't get the job done.  I think there is enough talent on this defense that it should be better.  London Fletcher didn't seem thrilled with Haslett as he left in retirement.  I would not be opposed to letting him go now and installing Raheem Morris in as DC for the remainder of the season to see what he can do.  It's sickening.  They lost this game for us.  With the score 17-14 Skins winning, the defense allowed Bridgewater to march the length of the field to score a TD.  RG3 leads a TD drive to take back the lead 26-21.  The defense again allows Bridgewater to lead a length of the field drive for the game winning TD.  UNACCEPTABLE!!!  The poor play of the defense was the story of the game.  They blew it.

Not much else to say.

Awesome commercial

If you didn't see this last night, it's worth watching.  For all the reasons I (and many others) despised LeBron for the way he left Cleveland, it's hard not to root for him now for coming back home and trying to complete some unfinished business.  This commercial seems to help capture LeBron's feelings and reasons for coming home.

RG3 is back!

Looks like RG3 will get the start this Sunday.  I like the move.  I'm sure some people will say they should rest him more and be patient.  I think they have been patient with him.  If this was last year, he probably would have tried to come back a couple of weeks ago.

The guy was doing running and agility drills a few weeks back.  He has been cleared by doctors.  He was doing limited practices last week and is doing full practices this week.  There is no reason to hold him out.  At least not physically.

Some people are all on the Colt McCoy bandwagon.  Most likely the same people that jumped off of the Cousins bandwagon.  Colt had a very good game against the Cowboys but the fact is that he is not nearly as talented as RG3.

Now I'm sure people will expect immediate greatness from the guy.  Again, fans are morons.  I expect him to play well but I imagine he will be a little rusty and it will take him a little bit to get back up to game speed.  What I really want to see is improvement from week to week and in his game three or four really putting it together.  That's what we need to see from him.  He also NEEDS to stay healthy.  He certainly can't afford another significant injury.

Anyway, glad he's back and it should be fun.

Wizards open up tonight agains the Heat

Wizards open their season tonight against Eastern Conference champs Miami.  It's a good test for both teams.  Wizards are a team on the rise and Miami wants to prove they can still compete without LeBron James.

For the Wizards, I expect them to have more confidence this season.  Getting into the second round of the playoffs last season proved to them that they are good.  They brought in a couple of veterans in Paul Pierce, Dejuan Blair, and Kris Humphries to help.  I like these moves particularly Pierce as he still has some gas left in the tank but more importantly he know what it takes to get to the championship.

The Wiz have some injuries namely to Bradley Beal but there is enough depth on this team that they should be fine until his return.

As far as Miami, again, they want to show that they are more than LeBron.  In particular, I think Chris Bosh is looking forward to having a more expanded role on this team.  I like the Luol Deng signing and frankly, I think this team will still be solid playoff team in the East.  At the same time, I can't imagine teams fearing them like in the past.  In fact, I expect a team like the Wizards to have more of a swagger to them and feeling like they are the better team.

Should be a good early test for both teams.  Looking forward to it although I will probably watch the Caps as they play at the same time tonight.

ESPN Power Rankings: Week 9

Skins:  #24 - up two from last week.
Pears:  #23 - down four from last week.
Puckers:  #7 - down one from last week.
Iggles:  #5 - down two from last week.
Texanas:  #21 - up two from last week.

Skins coming off of a tremendous win on MNF agains the Cowboys in Dallas.  Impressive win but need to follow that up with a win against the Viqueens in Minnesota otherwise that Dallas win is pretty meaningless.

Pears are on the brink of disaster.  Porous defense where tackling is optional.  Cutler throws picks.  He LOVES to throw picks!  Trestman is losing control.  They have a bye week and need to figure this out.

Puckers need to shore up the defense.  They also have a bye week which is good as it gives more time for Rodgers to heal up that hammy.  They would be a VERY different team with Flynn at the helm.

Iggles and Texanas battle in Houston.  Foles needs to be more consistent and the Iggles need this win against a tough Houston defense to show that they truly are a top team in the NFC.  Fitzpatrick needs to make some plays and not lose this game for Houston.

Skins beat Cowboys 20-17!

HUGE win last night!  The Skins typically save their worst performances for national TV but last night was one of their best.  Loved the way they played and I've said it many times before, teams need to learn how to win.  This was a great lesson for us.  I've felt in recent times, the Skins are satisfied with keeping it close but do not know how to pull out wins.  Even last night, it had a feeling for me that they were content with just being in the game.  Really enjoyed watching this team keep drives alive and stay aggressive and grind out the victory.  Just a real fun game to watch.  Here are my thoughts:

1. The "Real" McCoy.  This guy was huge.  He started out a little shaky.  He looked awkward back there and seemed to be telegraphing his passes.  His INT hurt as we had just gotten the ball on a turnover and he lofted one up for easy pickins for the safety.  Just a bad pass.  However, after that, the guy was gold.  He was aggressive.  He improvised.  He made plays with his feet and his throws were solid.  Have to give the guy a lot of credit for his play.  I like the way he speaks too.  Seems like a guy that is humble, very appreciative for the opportunity, and wants to prove his value to the NFL.  The only thing I find silly is this morning people are already talking about a new QB controversy.  SILLY!!!  This is RG3's team.  He will have it once he is healthy so I wish people would shut up.  Still, for what it was, Colt was tremendous yesterday and it shows how different the outcome of a game can be when you protect the ball.

2. DEFENSE.  Outstanding.  Haslett has taken a lot of criticism including from me.  However, have to give credit where credit is due and he deserves credit for dialing up a game plan that made it difficult for the Cowboys.  Yes, Murray got his yards but Romo struggled and was under duress for much of the game.  I loved that we were aggressive in dialing up blitzes and getting some good shots in on Romo.

3. Secondary.  I know they are part of the defense but giving these guys their own bullet.  Breeland and Amerson were awesome, particularly Breeland.  Felt like we saw this guy grow up last night.  He was physical and fearless.  There were a number of plays where he was one on one with Dez Bryant including two plays from the 5 yard line where the Cowboys targeted Bryant and both times Breeland made plays.  I loved when he made the plays, he got in Bryant's face and showed no signs of backing down.  Great CBs have to have supreme confidence and this guy showed it all night.  Brandon Meriweather also deserves credit for a couple of sacks and hard hits and a forced fumble.  Thought he had a strong game.  Again, the secondary has been highly criticized all season but they had an outstanding game.  Limiting Bryant to 3 catches for 30 yards is a big win for this secondary.

4. Commitment to the run game.  Good to see Morris get a little more on track.  Glad that we showed a bit more commitment to the run game and thought Morris, Helu, and even Redd all played well.  We still have some improvement here but it was good to see them get going.

5. Special teams were special.  Forbath made a couple of long FGs.  He has significantly improved his kickoffs where this was a big problem for him last year.  Tress Way continued his strong punting and had a great one late in the game pinning Dallas back inside their 5 yard line.  Coverage was strong all night as well.

All in all, just a great game.  I do believe this team is decent and if they hadn't turned the ball over so much in the other games, we would/should have won at least two more games.  It's two wins in a row and it gives some confidence to the team and some life to the season.  It's a short week and then Minnesota on Sunday.  While we have to feel pretty good today, to lose against the Viqueens would be soul crushing.  The Skins have to find a way to win that game and head into the bye week on a high.  Will be an interesting matchup pitting last season's Cincinnati's offensive and defensive coordinators against each other.

It's funny how everyone is all happy today.  Again, winning cures all.  The gossip and media will settle down and talk radio has a very different tone as all the callers are giving accolades and singing Cumbaya instead of chastising everyone and calling for change all over the place.  I have said it time and time again.  It's the nature of fans/media.  A win and everything is golden.  A loss and the world is crashing.  SILLY!!!

A final note about the Cowboy game, I thought it was very interesting the Cowboys chose to put Romo back in.  They guy is coming off of back surgery and took a hard hit to the back that required him to be pulled from the game.  He looked gimpy returning to the field late in the game and later revealed he got a cortisone shot to numb the pain.  Why send him back in?  Weeden was effective when he was in there and this game was not so significant for the Cowboys to risk the long term health of Romo.  Just seemed like a dumb and dangerous move.

In other NFL news:

1. The Pears are on the brink of disaster.  They got shelled in NE.  There is mounting frustration and division on that team and Trestman doesn't seem to have control.  Cutler is getting paid like an elite player and playing like a third stringer.  Another couple of losses like the one they just took and it will cost people their jobs.

2. Puckers take beating against NO.  Defense was offensive as they could not stop Brees or Ingram.  Of bigger concern was that it looked like Rodgers tweaked his hammy.  Hopefully for them it is not a significant injury because if they have to go with Flynn, the season will take a sharp downward turn.

3. Trouble in Seattle.  This team started the season looking better than how they finished last season.  Now with a couple of losses in a row and an unimpressive win against the Panteras this past week coupled with the dismissal of one of their best offensive players in Harvin have to leave you wondering how good is this team.  Reports are that Lynch is now upset with the Harvin trade and there is mounting locker room discord.  Wilson is trying to downplay everything in between of his endorsements.  They certainly have work to do.  This is what happens when you lose.  Winning cures all.

A final thought, at the midway point of the season, it's still unclear who is the clear front runner in the NFC.  It may very well be Arizona but no team looks unbeatable.  I'm sure the second half will bring lots of interesting games and stories.  Can't wait.

Have a great week everyone!  I know I will.  : )

It's getting ugly in Chi-town

Jay Cutler is getting smoked by opposing defenses this season. (USTASI)

After a poor performance last week in which B. Marshall had a post game locker room tirade, the Pears were abused by NE yesterday.  Apparently, tackling and coverage was optional yesterday as Tom Brady threw for five TDs.

I didn't watch the game other than some highlights.  I'm sure it is ugly in Chicago right now as fans and media are all over Trestman, Cutler, and the rest of the team.

Frankly, unless things turn around fast for them, it will be hard to keep Trestman around.  Cutler is wearing out his welcome as well.  As we all should know, this is very much a what have you done for me lately league.  You could have been great before but if you are not performing now, fans will turn on you with the drop of a hat.

Problem is that the Pears just committed long term to Cutler with A LOT of money so they are stuck with him.  Not good.

Skins vs. Dall-ASS tonight

It's gonna be a loo loo.  I know a lot of people aren't giving the Skins a chance.  Personally, I think it will be closer than people think.  Here are my keys:

1. Get Morris going.  We got to get that guy going.  He hasn't really done much all year.  It's a combination of blocking and running but we have to keep the Dallas offense off the field and if we are going to do that, we need to get Morris the ball and run effectively.

2. Will the "Real" McCoy show up?  While RG3 is listed as questionable, I would be shocked to see him tonight.  Looks like it will be Colt.  He was a star at Texas so he is going back home but it's been a while since he started a game and now he is doing it on Monday night against division rival Dallas in Big D.  Quite a way to have your first start in a while.  My hope for Colt is to just not turnover the ball.  Manage the game.  Make the safe throws and take what they give you.  Again, all the more reason to have Morris and the run game work so that they can help take pressure off of Colt.

3. Turnovers.  The Skins have been plagued by turnovers this season.  I believe they are worst in the league in +/- in turnovers this season.  Much of this is a result of Cousins throwing 3 INTs a game so, again, we have to be smart with the ball.  Morris, who was so sure handed his first couple of years, doesn't seem to have the same grip on the ball as before.  I believe this was a problem for him in college.  Again, Colt needs to be smart.

4. Who's gonna cover Dez?  The last couple of years DeAngelo Hall has done a tremendous job locking on Dez Bryant.  Without Hall, it will come down to Amerson and Breeland.  I like these two guys but they are young.  I imagine Romo will want to test them, particularly Breeland so this could be interesting.  I like Breeland's physicality but Bryant is a premier WR in the league and it's a tall order for any DB in the league so the CBs will have their hands full.

5. Limit Murray.  Demarco Murray is playing at an MVP level so the Skins will have to do their best to limit him.  Our run defense is pretty decent so hopefully it will stiffen up tonight to stop Murray.

6. GOT to pressure Romo.  Points four and five above both hinge on our ability to get pressure on Romo.  The Cowboy O-line has been one of the best in the league thus far.  That's why they have been so effective in the run.  Give any QB time and they should be able to complete the pass.  It is critical we get pressure on Romo because he will make mistakes under duress.  O-Krapo is done for the year and in steps rookie Trent Murphy.  I'm sure he will want to make a play but he has to remember his job and stay in position.  However, when it is time to rush, he needs to get to the QB.  Hopefully Haslett dials up some blitzes and can create some disruption and hopefully turnovers.

7. Replacements have to step up.  The Skins have suffered several injuries to key players this season (RG3, D. Hall, Cofield, O-Krapo, P. Riley, Golston and others nursing injuries) on top of that other guys will be getting opportunities because of ineffectiveness (namely McCoy and Compton at RT).  There are a lot of guys filling in and it's tough to win with second stringers and a third string QB.  Still, it's an opportunity for these guys to show that they belong.  Will be interesting to see how these guys fair.

This season obviously hasn't gone the way I had hoped.  It's hard to win with a second string QB in there doing his best Rex Grossman/Jeff Cutler imitation.  We've been in every game other than the Giants game but football games come down to just a few plays and if you are able to make those plays, you will win.  The Skins just haven't been able to make those plays.  Tonight I think we will hang tough and make it more interesting than people think but the number of injuries will be too much for us to overcome and the curse of playing on national tv will continue to haunt the Skins and they will fall 27-17.

Hopefully RG3 will be back next week.

Urlacher criticizes Cutler

From ESPN:

Jay Cutler is the highest-paid quarterback this season, and Brian Urlacher says that's the only thing elite about his former teammate."Financially, he is one of the elite guys in the NFL. ... He just hasn't produced like an elite quarterback," Urlacher said.

"You look at the Bradys, the Mannings, the Rodgers, the Brees, those guys win every year, even with no one around them," Urlacher said. "[Aaron] Rodgers has no offensive line. He wins. [Tom] Brady has no receivers. He wins.

"And you look at Jay. He's got Brandon [Marshall], Alshon [Jeffery], Matt [Forte], this great offensive line, Martellus Bennett, and they can't seem to put it together, for some reason. I'm not sure if that's his fault, but for some reason, they just can't figure it out."

Cutler has thrown for 14 touchdowns with 7 interceptions this season with all of the picks coming in the Bears' four losses. He has just one turnover (a fumble in a Week 3 win over the Jets) in the team's three victories.

Urlacher was a long time leader on the Pears and he was a staunch supporter of Jeff Cutler but he's right.  Cutler hasn't produced.  He has weapons around him but he isn't getting it done and isn't living up to his salary.

He also makes a great point about how elite QBs (e.g., Rodgers, Brady, Mannings) make up for their teams shortcomings and find ways to lead their teams to wins.

Equally at fault with the Pears is Trestman.  He was supposed to be a QB/offensive guru and he hasn't elevated Cutler's game.  With Marshall's outburst after the last game (and I don't think it was entirely unwarranted), Trestman is on the brink of losing the team if he hasn't done so already.  He may be in over his head taking on a storied franchise in a big market with big heads and big expectations.

Bottom line is Cutler better improve or it will only get uglier in Chi-town. You can bet talk radio is going nuts over there with Cutler and Trestman.  Urlacher just added fuel to the fire.

ESPN Power Rankings - Week 8

Skins: #26 up 2 spots.
Pears: #19 down 3 spots.
Puckers: #6 up 3 spots.
Iggles: #3 up 1 spot.
Texanas: #23 down 4 spots.

Skins (Cousins) tanked it but was saved by the "Real" McCoy.
Jeff Cutler throws picks. He LOVES to throw picks!!  Dissension in Chi-Town spells trouble for Trestman
Rodgers is playing well but a questionable D and run game may hold this team back.
Foles and McCoy have to show consistency.
The bubble may have burst in Houston.

O-Krapo done for the season

Reports today are that he tore his right pectoral muscle that will result in him missing the rest of the season.  He tore the left pectoral muscle at the end of the 2011 season and in the second game of the 2012 season.

This may actually be addition by subtraction.  Again, I like Krapo but he hasn't produced this year at all.  He was franchised this year so he is making top dollar.  Given his lack of production and inability to stay healthy and him becoming a UFA at the end of the year, he may have played his last game with the Skins.

Dude is going to be 29 or so and unless he is willing to take a big pay cut, let him walk.  Would rather spend the money on Kerrigan and someone else.  Krapo hasn't shown he is worth it.

Still, it's a shame the guy can't stay healthy.

The Real McCoy? -- Skins win

It wasn't the prettiest of games but a win is a win and you never have to apologize for that.  The real story was the benching of Cousins at halftime and going with Colt McCoy.  Here are a few thoughts on the game:

1. What up Cuz?  The bench, that's what.  I like Cousins.  He seems like a really nice guy but you can't be turning the ball over 2-3 times a game and expect to win.  He has made some really nice passes while the starter but he has made some equally frustrating throws that leave you scratching your head.  What has been more troubling is the look on his face recently seems to indicate that his confidence has taken a hit.  He just didn't look like a guy that knew he could make the plays needed to win games.  Apparently he struggled in the Friday practice and that probably had as much to do with his benching as the INT he threw that led to a Titan TD.  So in comes McCoy and on his first drive he throws a short sideline pass to Garcon who takes it 70 yards for a TD.  Quite the spark.  Colt made some nice throws and led a late game winning drive to give the Skins the win.  All of a sudden everyone has forgotten about Kirk and the new guy is in town and people are excited about Colt.  It's interesting because RG3 has been practicing and will practice this week so with Dallas coming up on Monday night, who will get the start at QB?  If RG3 is completely healthy and has enough practice under him, I'd say give him the nod.  If there is any question about his health or having enough practice, go with Colt.  I think Cousins has played himself out of the position.  Again, I feel bad for the guy because he blew his chance.  He had a real opportunity to seize the QB position here in D.C. or some place else but he didn't perform.  Will be interesting to see what becomes of him.

2. The other change.  While everyone was caught up with the change at QB, they may not have noticed that Polumbus was relieved of his duties in favor of Tom Compton for a few drives.  It isn't any secret that Polumbus has struggled this year at RT.  Being a UFA, I imagine this is it for Polumbus and the Skins are hoping to replace him with either Compton or Morgan Moses.

3. O-Krapo stinks.  He just can't get it done.  I like the guy and want him to be good but I have been watching him more closely each week and he isn't doing anything.   He just can't get to the QB.  He either takes a really wide turn to get to the QB making it easy for the QB just to step into the pocket to avoid him or more often, he tries to bull rush but isn't big enough to take on large LTs in this league.  Adding to fans frustration is that he probably partially tore his pec muscle again which will sideline him for some time (this may be a good thing).  The guy hasn't been effective and has had his injury woes.  I bet the collective fan base is thrilled we didn't lock him up long term this past offseason.  Will be interesting to see what we do with him this offseason.

4. D Jax.  This guy made some really nice catches.  I just wish we could get the ball to him more.

5. Morris?  The run game which has been so good the last few years is stagnant.  The line isn't creating many running lanes and Morris isn't breaking some of the tackles he did in previous years.  Wondering if Helu would be a better option as he is a bit quicker and a much better receiver out of the backfield.

In the end, it's a win and the Skins needed one.  Winning and losing is contagious.  Good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose.  Felt like the last few weeks, the Skins were beating themselves and seemed almost comfortable with keeping games close.  Again, will be interesting to see who starts at QB next week but if they could some how pull off the upset against Dallas, all of a sudden they are right back in the mix.  The Titan win was one game and it's nothing to get overly excited about but you have to start somewhere.

In other relevant NFL news:

1. GB has hit their groove.  They cruise to a win over the struggling Panthers.  They could make a case for the top team in the NFC.

2. Problems for the Pears.  Cutler throws picks.  He LOVES to throw picks.  Bad INT and a couple of inopportune fumbles led to the Fins beating Chicago at home.  The miscues led to B. Marshall going off in the locker room.  Things may be unraveling for Trestman.

3. Problems in Seattle.  Two straight losses for the Seacawks coupled with the trade of one of their best offensive weapons in Percy Harvin have to get folks wondering what is going on in Seattle.  Still think this team is a top team in the NFC but they have to regroup and pull it together.

The NFL is like a soap opera.  Each week brings about more drama.  Until next Sunday, have a great week!

Os swept

Disappointing.  The bats just never came alive in the series.

Caps fall to Sharks 6-5 in SO

GREAT game!  Despite the loss, I really liked the way the Caps played.  Frankly, I thought the Caps were the better team and loved the way they fought back after being down 3-0 in the first period.

Obviously, it wasn't Holtby's night and Justin Peters came in and from there the Caps really took it to the Sharks.

It's clear the difference in play.  The offensive guys are getting back on D and the defensive guys are coming in on offensive rushes.  When this happens, other guys on the team are filling in for these rushes.  It's just good team hockey.  There also seems to be a commitment to shorter shifts which is what you need when you are asking guys to skate more/harder when they are on the ice.

Never like to lose but if we play like that every night, we will end up with two points more times than not.

Caps take on a revitalized Devils team tomorrow night.  Should be a good one.

RG3 to start individual drills this week

Looks like RG3's return is moving forward with him expected to take individual drills this week and team drills next week.  It is very possible we could see him on Monday night against the Cowboys.

He has been doing sprints and agility drills for a couple of weeks now and I'm sure he is itching to come back.

Feel kind of bad for Cousins as he is blowing his chance to be a starter in this league.  Feel annoyed at "fans" for bad mouthing RG3 in favor of Cousins only to turn around now and do the same with Cousins in favor of RG3.  Still, it's the nature of fans.

When RG3 returns, I just hope that he is truly healthy enough to get back out there.

Os and Royals postponed - Game 3 tonight

The Os game was postponed last night because of weather.  Instead they will go tonight and then again on Wednesday afternoon.

The Os lost two tough games where they were close but could never take the lead.  Tonight is a must win as they can't afford to go down 0-3 in the series.  Chen will be going up against former Oriole Jeremy Guthrie.  Need to get the big bats working and jump out to lead.

The Royals are pesky and you give them a lead, they play with more confidence.  They do a great job of getting guys on base and then making you worry about them with their speed.  The Orioles need to get that early lead and put the pressure on KC.

I don't care too much for regular season baseball but I really enjoy playoff baseball.  Looking forward to tonight and hopefully the Orioles can get back into this thing tonight.

Also, given the postponement, there is a good chance we could see Tillman vs. Shields again tomorrow.

Skins lose...AGAIN!!!

I'll cut right to the chase.

1. What up Cuz?  This guy is channeling his inner Rex Grossman and throwing picks left and right.  The first one just sailed on him as he had an open Andre Roberts breaking towards the seam in the middle.  A catch and this is a big gain and possibly a TD.  Instead, it's an easy pick for the safety.  The second came late in the game as they were driving on a third and short and he stared down the WR and it was an easy play.  The last not sure what he saw.  It was right at the end of the game and I guess he was throwing a mid range ball to Garcon and didn't see the DB playing zone underneath and it was right to him for a TD.  Cuz is blowing his opportunity at being a starter in this league.  I like him but when he throws picks, he throws them in bunches.  All those Cousins lovers are all of a sudden waiting for RG3 to come back.  THILLY!

2. O-KRAP-O!  This guy is starting to tick me off.  He claims to be elite.  He says his record stands for itself.  I suppose it does.  It stands for MEDIOCRE!!!  Dude has .5 sack this season.  That's terrible.  Then yesterday he has a chance to make the play of the game with an INT that is softly thrown right into his hands with all kinds of space in front of him for possibly a TD and what does he do?  DROP IT!!!  FAIL!!!  This guy is not worth the money.  Not sure what he is going to ask for in the offseason but I don't mind letting him walk.  I want to like him but it's hard when you are paying top dollar for the guy for little production.  Where is Rob Jackson?

3. Run game?  Morris has been quiet all season.  I think this is a combination of scheme, blocking, and Morris.  For whatever reason, we have to get him going in order to take some of that pressure off of the QB.  Just disappointing after six weeks, we haven't seen much from him.

4. Roberts "fumble."  This was a critical play.  In the fourth quarter, had a chance to come back and on a drive to get the lead, Roberts "fumbles" over the middle.  The play was challenged and looking at the replay, it looked as though his knee hit the ground prior to the fumble but I understand that there may not have been enough evidence to overrule the call of the field.  That was a killer.  Didn't like the call and it hurt.

All in all, it wasn't a terrible game.  Again, we hung tough but we can't make enough plays to win the game.  Good teams find ways to win and bad teams find ways to lose and that is what is happening now.  I've said it before, winning is contagious just as losing is.  We need to find a way to win a game and start building some momentum.  Right now, there is mounting frustration and disappointment.  I believe there are some solid pieces here but it just has to come together.  Right now, it's not.

In other relevant news around the NFL:

1. Rodgers and the Puckers pull out a last second drive to win against the Fins.  All the naysayers in GB should be much more R-E-L-A-Xed now.

2. Pears pull out a good victory against the Falcones in HOT-lanta.  They needed that and Cutler actually didn't do what he does best (throw picks).  May have saved their season with that victory.

3. Iggles manhandle Eli and the Gigantes.  Too bad for Victor Cruz as he suffers a patella tendon injury and is done for the year.

4. Texans claw back against Indy but fall short.  J.J. Watt scores another TD but it's not enough and the Texanas lose.  Still, Watt is a beast.

5. How 'bout dem Cowboys?  I normally don't talk about them but they go into Seattle (arguably the toughest place to play) and beat the Seacawks.  Pretty impressive.  Suddenly, the Cowboys look like they may be the team to beat in the NFC.

That's all I got.  Have a good week!

RG3 coming back for Dallas game?

RG3 and the Skins have been very quiet on his injury and the time table for his return.  Several weeks ago there was talk of him possibly being ready for the Dallas game (game after the bye week).  The above video was taken from practice a couple of days ago where he is doing some agility drills.  He certainly looks like a guy that is making significant progress from that dislocated ankle.

I will say this.  I would love to have RG3 back.  I know many people are down on him but he really hasn't had much of a chance to play healthy since his rookie season.  I want him back but only if he is truly healthy.  Suffering a dislocated ankle is a significant injury and the possibility of dislocating it again is very possible if it hasn't healed properly.  If he does come back, I'm sure they will tape the heck out of the ankle to keep it as stable as possible but then how will that impact his play?

This will be interesting to see what unfolds but it certainly looks like he and the Skins are targeting that Dallas game.

Caps drop opener to Habs in shootout

Disappointing but there were positives.  Honestly, the first period was the best I have seen the Caps in a while.  They dominated the play outshooting the Canadiens 15-2 in the frame.  Unfortunately, they only managed one goal in that time.  Still, it was impressive to see what I thought was a very disciplined approach with guys outworking the other team.  Guys were playing both ends of the ice and there were a number of good chances.

Problem was the same fire did not carry over into the rest of the game.  The second period was largely even with Montreal dictating play for stretches.  The third period got a little worse particularly late in the third period when Montreal tied it up and also had two goals called back (one for goalie interference and the other on a replay showing the puck never crossing the goal line).  Eventually, went to shootout and we couldn't pull it out.

Again, disappointing.  Especially, on opening night at home as the Caps celebrated their 40th anniversary.  It wasn't meant to be but I will say that I do like the team and I think we will be much improved from a season ago.

A couple of final notes:

1. Burakovsky was outstanding.  He scored his first goal of his NHL career and he looked comfortable out there most of the night.  It's clear he has skill with some of his moves and despite his age and size, he seems pretty comfortable with the physical play of the NHL.

2. Defense looks better.  Orpik layed the wood out on several players and really provides some much needed toughness on the back end.  Niskanen also made his presence felt with some nice shots on net and solid defense.  As mentioned in a previous post, stronger defense alone should make this a playoff team.

3. Holtby much more aggressive.  The guy went back to his roots and was much more aggressive in his play.  He really comes out of the net which I am not sure is always the best thing but if he's comfortable with that and it works, good for all of us.

Not much more to say.  This game is done and now it is on to a VERY tough test against the Bruins Saturday night.  It's fun to have the Caps back.

Caps season opener tonight

It's the start of another season for the Caps as they take on the Canadiens tonight at Verizon Center.  It's been a tumultuous couple of years but I'm pretty excited about this season.  I like the hiring of Barry Trotz as he seems to have full command of the team.  I like the way he speaks as he exudes confidence.  Apparently he is a more old school type of coach and ran a pretty tough camp which I think is good for this team.  I also like the additions made in the offseason.  Here are a couple of thoughts as we get ready for this season:

1. Huge upgrade on the defense.  Obviously, the defense was pathetic last year.  The Caps went out and took two of their rivals best D men in Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik.  Like these pickups.  Orpik is older and not thrilled about the contract he received but he does bring a toughness to the D and that is a good thing.  Niskanen was probably the best D man in FA and we locked him up.  He is solid on D and is also a threat on offense.  That gives us three quality D guys that can play offense in Niskanen, Carlson, and Green.  We also brought in the D coach from Pittsburgh to help this group.  Given the upgrade to the defense and Trotz's commitment to defense, I expect much better play from this group.  Frankly, if we had even an average defense last season, we would have been a playoff team so the upgrades made are huge.

2. Ovi back to LW.  He is more comfortable in that spot and I'm sure he is happy to be back there.  The key is to get Ovi to get back on defense and show the same commitment on that side of the rink as he does on the offensive side.

3. Holt-BEAST?  Adam Oates is more of a tactician and student of the game.  He wanted to work on finer points and tried to change people to fit his thoughts in hopes of making them better.  Sometimes it worked and sometimes it did not.  In the case of Holtby, he was asked to stay deeper in the net which is different than Holtby's more aggressive approach.  Trotz brought in Mitch Korn who is apparently the goalie guru in the NHL and listening to Holtby yesterday sounds like he is much more comfortable with Korn's teachings as it is getting him back to where he feels more comfortable.  With the upgrades to defense and getting Holtby where he is more comfortable, I think we will see a rejuvenated season from him.

4. Burakovsky and Kuznetsov.  To me, these guys are the key to the season.  Burakovsky is a 19 year old kid from Sweden that has come in and will take over the #2 center position.  Kuznetsov is very skilled but still trying to adapt to the smaller rinks and more physical play of the NHL.  He has put on some muscle during the offseason but still has to adapt to the rigors of the NHL game.  You could see that he had talent last season but shyed away from contact and appeared tentative at times.  I think we know what we'll get out of most of the players but these two young guys are very talented but can they raise their game up to the NHL level.  If they can, I think the Caps have a chance to be something special this season.  They are going to be fun to watch.

5. Mike Green?  Last but not least is Mike Green.  A few years ago, this guy was a Norris Trophy finalist.  He was one of the best skaters and defenders in the league.  Injuries have side tracked his career and he now finds himself in the final year of his contract and fighting to prove he is still a top tier D man in the league.  If he can show some type of resurgence it would be huge for both him and the team.  He's already nursing an injury so he's not starting out on the best foot but we'll see how his season progresses.

As mentioned, I'm excited about this team.  I believe we have the right guy to lead this team and there is renewed excitement from the players with the guys they added and the new coach.  It all starts tonight.  The Caps have typically started slow so hopefully we can buck that trend this season.  Should be fun.

UNLEASH THE FURY!!!

Nats LOSE! Season over.

Disappointing.  They just didn't get it done.  The offense was pathetic.  Outside of Harper, no one did anything.  Werth, Laroche, Desmond, Span, Ramos all sucked.  The relief pitching needed to be perfect and they weren't.  Starting with Storen blowing the save in Game #2 which probably was the deciding game in the series.  If the Nats win that, I think they win the series.  Last night, they couldn't even intentionally walk a runner right.

Frankly, I also think they should go to a seven game series for the divisional series.  I truly believe the best team wins in seven game series but there is a better chance for upsets in five game series.  I think five game series can give the underdog teams an advantage as they come in to the series with some momentum having won the wild card game.  The team that wins their division and has home field advantage (in this case Washington) should not be penalized for winning the division and having to wait for who they play.  I do think it hurts them for having to sit and wait to play a team that is still fighting for the post season and playing more meaningful games.  That's why I think a seven game series would be more fair and better.  Still, for what it is, the Nats choked and couldn't get it done and now they go home and wait until next year.  I expect the Nats to be good again next year.  The only major loss I see is Laroche who will probably be gone as he will want a longer term contract and at his age, he won't get it here.  Also, Ryan Zimmerman will probably take over first base so there won't be a need for Laroche.  Cabrera may go as well but not a huge deal.  Other than than, this team should largely stay in tact.

At least we still have the Os.  Should be a good series.  It's basically Baltimore's power vs. KC's speed.  Os starting pitching isn't great so they will need to put up some runs and rely on the relievers.  Still like the Os to win this series but then again, I liked the Nats to win over SF.

Skins fall to Seacawks 27-17

The first quarter was a debacle but outside of that it was a competitive game.  The Skins were just sloppy all around in the first quarter.  Fortunately we didn't dig too big a hole and still had a chance late but it wasn't to be.  Here are a few thoughts on the game:

1. Wilson.  The guy shredded the Skins D early and had like 80 yards rushing in the first quarter.  What was most bothersome about these yards was that much of them came off of the bootleg or read option.  For F sake play your position!  Whether it was O-Krapo, Kerrigan, or Murphy all these guys bit on the handoff.  I don't doubt this was practiced and these guys have seen RG3 do it so fine if it happens once but it happened over and over again.  Play your freaking position!  I know it is easier said than done but these guys are the best at what they do and they need to be disciplined.  It was frustrating to see it happen over and over again.  I also know that Lynch is a beast and that you have to pursue from the back but trust your teammates to make a play and stay home and do your job/role.

2. 1st quarter stunk.  Whether it was biting on the boot or dropped balls, missed blocks, missed assignments, it was just all ugly in the first quarter.  Just sucky!  The only redeeming thing was that it did get much better after the first quarter.

3. Field position.  Just really poor field position for us all game and as a result, Seattle had really good field position.  Didn't mind going for the onside kick when we did.  The only problem was that because it didn't work, it pretty much set up poor field position for most of the second half.  I believe there was a stat that came up in the fourth quarter that we didn't have a drive start from outside the 20 yard line the entire game and many of the drives started within the 10 yard line.

4. Play of the game.  We had a chance late in the game after scoring to get the ball back for a last drive.  On a 3rd and short, Wilson just made a big time play.  He got pursuit from Kerrigan and spun around and ran to his left with pressure coming.  He floated a pass just over the out stretched hands of Jason Hatcher to Lynch who got the ball deep into the Skins territory.  Great play and it sealed the victory.

In the end, outside of the first quarter, it was a solid effort.  Still, there are no moral victories and it stinks.  I know everyone wants to be down on the Skins and while I'm not thrilled with a loss, this is something to build off of.  It wasn't the sort of embarrassment that took place a couple of weeks ago against the Giants.  Have to get better and healthy and keep pressing on.

At least the Nats won and kept there season alive.

Skins vs. Seacawks tonight!

Get ready for a loo loo!  Both teams should be well rested as Seattle had a bye week and the Skins played last Thursday.  Skins have SUCKED on national tv so they will get another chance to either dispel that reputation or further showcase their ineptitude.  The only good thing is that Seattle has to make the cross country trip and play here.  If this was in Seattle...fuggettaboutit!

Here are a few keys to the game:

1. What up Cuz?!  Which Cousins will show up tonight?  Cousins has been pretty inconsistent in all of his starts.  He has the ability to be very good but he has shown he can turn it over with the best of them (e.g, Rex Grossman and Jeff Cutler). Hopefully it is the good Cuz tonight.

2. Give a healthy dose of Morris.  Just grind it out with Morris.  Lets see what the guy can do.

3. Go at Sherman.  Would love to see Desean go deeeeeep on the first play and go right at Sherman.  I'm sure there will be some talking b/t these two tonight.

4. Spy on Wilson.  Need to keep a spy on Wilson. This may be Meriweather.  Just can let the guy beat us with his feet.

5. Need the young'uns to grow up REAL fast.  I'm talking about Amerson and Breeland (particularly Breeland).  I think Amerson has been good and is settling in nicely as a starter in the NFL.  Breeland needs to calm down and play his game.  Still, we need big games from these two.

6. O-Krapo.  Orakpo keeps saying that he is elite but we have yet to see it.  The Post came out with an article recently (I heard about it but didn't read it) talking about Rak being limited in moves and technique in his pass rush.  I don't care.  All I need is for Orakpo to do something and back up his words.  Frankly, he's playing for a contract so he really needs to step up.

7. Special teams.  Please be good (or at least not bad).

This is tough matchup for anyone.  It hurts but Skins lose 31-17.

In other NFL news:

1. Puckers look to have fully rebounded with a drubbing of the Viqueens and everyone has settled down in GB (at least for now).

2. Pears lose a tight one to the Panteras.  Basically, Cutler throws picks.  He LOVES to throw picks!

3. Iggles have issues with their run game and an inconsistent Foles and the defense isn't particularly great yet they continue to win.  I believe their schedule toughens up these next few weeks so we'll get a better sense of how good they are.

4. Texanas lose a close one to the Azzboyz.  J.J. Watt had a chance to blow up Tony Shlomo but he whiffed and Shlomo threw a bomb to T. Williams for a TD.  It was the play of the game.  Shlomo better enjoy that one because he will inevitably throw 5 INTs in the final game of the season that costs them a shot at the playoffs.

That all for now.

HTTR!!!

Nats and Os playoffs

So it is settled.  The Os play this afternoon against the Tigers.  It will be Scherzer vs. Tillman.  Scherzer has been fantastic the last two years and Tillman is solid.  The Os lineup is better than the Tigers but I think it will be important to grab this first game.  If the Os can win this one, they should win this series but it should be a good one.

The Giants beat the Pirates in the WC game last night so they get the right to face the Nats.  The Nats are by far the better overall team and with Bumgarner going last night, it gives the Nats a HUGE advantage.  Strasburg will most likely go up against Peavy and I think Strasburg is chomping at the bit for this opportunity.  Frankly, I think the entire Nats team is really looking forward to this.  They had the talent a couple of years ago but they did not have the maturity/experience.  They have that now.  No question they will be excited but I think it will be tempered by recognizing you can't look forward and have to play every game, every inning, every out.  I expect the Nats to win this series handily.

Baseball playoffs start tonight

I'm not a huge baseball fan but the playoffs are exciting and they are even more exciting given both the Nats and the O's are in the postseason.

Baltimore will face the Tigers.  The Nats will find out tomorrow who they play as SF faces Pitt in the wild card matchup.

What I like about both the Nats and the O's is they are both very balanced teams (I think the Nats are more so than the O's).  They have quality starting pitching, solid bats from top to bottom, and good relievers.  Both teams will be very difficult to beat.

For the Nats I also like that Strasburg has a chance to show why he was drafted number 1 overall a few years back.  Having missed out on the postseason a couple of years ago, I think he is itching for this moment.  I also think Drew Storen is looking for some redemption.  This team is more mature than it was a couple of years ago and I think they believe they should win it all which is a big part of playoff baseball.

Should be fun.

Laron Landry suspended 4 games for PED use

SHOCKER!!!!
