Skins Draft

First and foremost, thank goodness for not getting Sanchez. I am happy about this on so many levels. Second, very happy Orakpo fell to 13 and we were able to snatch him up. Fills a HUGE need for us.

After that, I don't really know the guys. We took some MD CB in the third round. Seems pretty good although CB wasn't really a need for us. We have Rogers, Hall, Smoot there. I suppose we needed some depth as Tryon is a backup but he sucked in preseason last year and seems to think he is much better than he is so Barnes may be a decent selection.

We then took two LBs with our next picks. LB is a need. Washington may resign with us but he is always injured anyways and I believe we lost a couple of backup guys so it's good to replenish with some younger guys.

After that, we took a FB and a WR in the seventh round. Most likely these guys won't make the team but they're fine if we think they have any talent.

The only thing I was a little surprised about was that we didn't draft any O linemen. We did sign some guy that was the 4th overall pick in 2002 but he hasn't played in a couple of years. The guy played with Dockery at the University of TX but chances are the guy is soft like dough now and won't amount to much.

I suppose we can bring in some undrafted rookies and see if any one pans out.

Frankly, not signing Sanchez and getting Orakpo makes the draft decent for me.

I really wanted to see the turmoil with Sanchez, but it looks like the Redskins dodged a bullet and got good player with their first pick.

I agree with you that Chase Daniel is no big deal. You always want to bring in a couple of young QBs every year. It is good for evaluation, but you need arms to throw passes in mini-camp and throughout the pre-season.

If we had taken Sanchez, there would have been A LOT of VERY angry fans out there. Frankly, I think a lot of people would have turned their back on the team. Not just because QB wasn't a need but we would have had to give up several picks to get the guy who is unproven.

The ONLY way that could have worked out is if Sanchez would have ended up becoming the second coming of Joe Montana and led us to multiple Super Bowl victories and that would be asking a lot.

Just as I am now semi interested in watching Cutler and how he does with the Bears, I will be equally curious to watch how well Sanchez will do in NY.

Sanchez seems like a good kid, but the success of Flacco and Ryan has created sky high expectations.

If you actually look at Flacco's (2971 yds, 14 TD, 12 Int) and Ryan's (3440 yds, 16 TD, 11 Int) numbers they were OK, but not spectacular. The bottom line was that both of those teams had good running games and improved defenses. As rookies, they managed their teams well. It will be interesting to see what happens this year.

Vinny and Zorn have said the price was way too high for Sanchez. I really don't have a problem with the whole Sanchez thing, because Campbell has been focused and pushing himself hard the whole time. We didn't overspend to make a trade, so no harm done. If Sanchez could have been had at a marginal expense, I think I'd be fine with it because I don't see Campbell getting much better than he is. He's as good as the talent around him is. Sanchez could be the type that makes those around him better, so it was worth investigating, but not worth what the Jets ended up giving up.

Honestly, I am extremely disappointed with our draft. Orakpo was a great pick. Don't get me wrong. I don't mind the DB taken in the 3rd round either. He's big and will be a more imposing defender than the midget we drafted last year. I am just shocked that we chose to take two marginal LBs, a FB and a TE over any of the tackles that were available. I believe the late rounds of the draft should be to build depth and the position where we lacked any depth is the OT. At two points, we were up and Mel Kiper's best available player was a tackle. There were also at least two or three other O-linemen available who were projected to go higher. We didn't take any of them and they got snatched up right after we picked the no-name LB out of TCU.

I think we failed miserably with our last 4 picks. All I can do is hope that Vinny is smarter than he looks, and that's not going to be easy for me to do.

One more thing...It seems that the 'Skins put all their effort into the first few picks and don't really care what happens with the later rounds and it seems that our fanbase is content with that.

Did you see what the Cowgirls and the Patriots did? Dallas had zero picks on day one and 12 picks on day two. The Patriots traded away their first rounder and had 12 picks from rounds 2-7. The Patsies probably do it better than Dallas, but both teams obviously value the later rounds because its the best way to bring in talent to develop.

We suck at the draft. I see an '09 season where we start alright, then Jansen gets hurt, Thomas gets dinged up and we have to trade next year's picks to get some re-tread journeyman to save our O-Line. Campbell will be set-up to fail behind a patchwork line and will not be given a new contract.

At least our D will be ranked #1.

I hope I'm wrong about our O, but I'm not too thrilled right now.

Deeps, you're partially crazy. The Sanchez thing was ridiculous. It was wrong on SO many levels. Here are just a few reasons:

1. JC is deserving of a shot to be our franchise QB. He is in the prime of his career, he will be playing in the same system with the same coaches as last year for the first time in like 7 years. He has the respect of his teammates and coaches.

2. The fans were not in favor of Sanchez. At the Redskin draft day party at FedEx, they were chanting JC's name and no one interviewed came forward wanting Sanchez.

3. After the Cutler thing went down and he ended up going to Chicago, the Redskins brass sat JC down to clear the air and told him that he was the guy. So what did Danny Boy do next? Start trying to woo Sanchez. It was the wrong thing to do after just having the talk with JC about him being the guy. It "shocked" JC and disappointed him.

4. Sanchez may end up being great but there are still a number of questions with him and there is no guarantee that he is going to be any better than JC. Sanchez has only started 16 college games in his career and he plays for a team that has FAR superior talent then its competition. Don't give me that he faces the USC defense every day nonsense either because anyone that has played sports at any level knows that games are very different than practice.

5. It would have terrible to have given up future picks. I was not willing to do that.

6. As Robs said, Sanchez had been the great benficiary of the success of Ryan and Flacco last year and it restored people's faith in drafting college QBs early. Sanchez also was great at interviewing and impressed people with his personality.

Again, Sanchez may end up having a Pro Bowl career but he may end up not amounting to much at all. 61% of college QBs that come out early do not succeed.

Frankly, it makes sense to go with JC. The guy has talent and when things went bad last year, it can't be pinned on JC. The line sucked and the WRs weren't much better. It was a total team breakdown. JC has a lot to play for this year. Aside from the pay day, he seems like a strong character guy that wants to prove that he is a franchise QB. Should he not perform, fine, every year there is the "hot" college QB so we will have an opportunity next year. Next year's class will probably include guys like Bradford, McCoy, Tebow and others so if we need to abandon JC, there will be options.

Regarding the draft, I would have liked to have picked up an O lineman or two but LB was a need as well. Unless we bring back Khary Campbell and Washington, we have some issues there. Fletcher is still very good but getting long in the tooth. McIntosh is solid but has injury issues and struggled some late in the year. That leaves us with Fincher and Blades. We signed some reject from the Raiders (Robert Thomas) and have some guy Tyson Smith as backups but I'm not counting on these guys. I suppose we could always try and move undersized DE Chris Wilson into the LB role but that is risky. I don't know how good the guys are that we drafted but LB certainly was an area we needed for depth.

I suppose we feel a little more comfortable with O line depth with Heyer and Rinehart and possibly bringing back Kendall in a backup role.

Again, I would have been happy with an O lineman pick but I also know that LB was an area of need and if they felt more strongly in the value they got at LB than the value they could have gotten at OL with their picks, I will accept it.

Clearly, Orakpo makes the draft decent.
