The Tribune is reporting that Darren Sharper is still interested in joining the Bears but the Bears are not interested in Darren Sharper. Safety is a need for the Bears and it's intriguing that they would balk at the veteran who has spent his career playing within the division and who could provide some much needed leadership and stability in the Bear secondary.
Jermaine Phillips was resigned by the Bucs who the Bears were interested in. Former Cowboy Roy Williams is available but I don't think he would be a good fit. His pass coverage skills are an issue. He is more of a LB type. With NFL offenses becoming increasingly pass oriented, you need to have a fast FS that can cover a lot of ground and good pass intuition. Roy Williams is not that kind of guy.
Not sure what the Bears intend to do but from the Tribune's blogs Bears fans are certainly upset with the direction of the team.

I'd like to see some depth at safety. They have a lot of young guys who are second and third year players, and I'd like to see a veteran player there, but my guess is that they are going to go with Kevin Payne, Craig Steltz, and Zack Bowman at safety. All of those guys are second or third year guys who all showed signs.
Payne and Bowman went out with injuries, but they played very well when they were in. Steltz was solid but not spectacular when he got his chance.
As for some Bears fans complaining - what else is new. Those are the same fans that will jump on the bandwagon when the Bears cruise into the Super Bowl.
"Bears cruise into the Super Bowl?" When? Safety is a question for the Bears and those guys are not the answer. In fact, if I were a Bear fan and if I heard that those guys are the answer, I wouldn't want to know what the question was.
Once again, Angelo doesn't want to spend to bring in help.
You seemed to recognize that the Bears needed help at Safety and were pretty hot on them getting Sharper. Now that Angelo seems unwilling to sign Sharper, who has shown willingness to join the Bears, you defend them and the group of players that will play Safety.
One minute you weren't happy with their Safety personnel but when it looks like they aren't going to address it, you are fine with them.
I can appreciate your love for your team but you will follow them blindly. Some how though if the roles were reversed and if the above was all true but the team was the 'Skins I am fairly certain you would come down pretty hard on Snyder, Cerrato, Zorn, etc.
I'm not sure what you are talking about. I said, I'd like to see a veteran player there.
But it looks like they are going to give their young guys a chance. If that is what they do, I support them.
Whatever they decide, this is a big year for the Bears and the coaching staff. They have to show progress, meaning they need to make it back to the playoffs.
You are correct. I misunderstood and misspoke. For that, I apologize.
Agree that it is a big year for the Bears and their coaching staff.
The same is true for the Redskins. If these teams don't perform, jobs will be lost.
