Redskins control their own destiny.

Good week in football. Obviously, the 'Skins beat the Bears which was great on so many levels but even better the Lions lost and the Cardinals lost putting the 'Skins just one game behind the Vikings for the final playoff spot.

There are 3 games left and essentially every game is a playoff game at this point. The bad part is that the Vikings are one of the hottest teams in the NFC right now and they have an easier schedule. The Vikings play the Bears, Redskins, and Broncos. We play the Giants, Vikings, and Cowboys. Anything can happen but I would love to see the Redskins win next week setting up a huge game against the Vikings the following week. That game could quite possibly be the decider for who gets into the playoffs.

I know you can't count out the Cards and Lions and a couple other teams but I am just looking at the 'Skins and how they control their own destiny which is what you want.

One interesting thing is that Todd Collins will be starting this week. I know everyone is all high on him right now because of his performance last week and also during the preseason. However, we have to remember that Collins is a 36 year old perennial backup for a reason. Yes, he understands the Al Saunders offense very well however, he has some physical limitations. This could be a concern against the Giants defense as they have a pretty good pass rush. It will also be tough playing in the Meadowlands. Still, I like our team and Eli has not been playing particularly well which is typical in the second half of the season. We'll see what happens.

I will be rooting hard for the Bears this weekend.

Even if the Bears beat the Vikings, we still need to win out...Knowing that we're in with three wins is reassuring though. What's not reassuring is the quality of the opponents we have to play. I trust Collins to make good decisions, but as you said, he's been a career backup for a reason. I hope our line can give him protection to find his receivers. If he starts getting hit, all we'll be looking forward to is what our draft position will be.

During Thursday's game, Gumbel said the 'Skins and 'Bears were tied for the most difficult schedule this season. How did the NFC Champs and an NFC doormat from a season ago end up with equally difficult seasons?

The Redskins do not control their own destiny. Even if they win out they may not make the playoffs. By definition that makes your post title incorrect.

Deeps - to answer your question about schedules, the answer is simple. Because you don't know how good or bad teams are going to be from year to year.

Teams that have Cincy and Baltimore on their schedule thought they were going to be much tougher. Cleveland and Buffalo have surprised. It happens every year.

As for the Redskins, they are not going to run the table. They are too flawed to do that.

If we win this week, that Viking game becomes huge. Actually, it just became the flex game so that would be 3 weeks in a row the 'Skins play on national tv in prime time.

I'm sure Collins understands the system well. What he can't control is the pressure on him and making sure the receivers run the right routes. To me, he seems mechanical and unable to improvise. If the play runs as planned and everyone does their job, I think he can succeed. Still, the guy hasn't started a game in like 10 years. Again, there is a reason for that.

Against the Bears, he had his best game of his career. We are going to need him to match that if we intend on getting to the playoffs.

I don't really like talking about playoffs when we aren't even in there yet. Sounds cliche but we have to play one game at a time and essentially for the 'Skins every game is a playoff. I would just love to win this week to set up a very meaningful game against the Vikings the following week.

How do we not control our own destiny? Currently, we sit one game behind Minnesota for the final playoff spot. If we win out including the win at Minnesota, we would be tied with them and own the tiebreaker pushing us ahead of them and into the playoffs so how do we not control our own destiny?

My mistake, I just looked at the standings and saw that only the Vikings are above the Redskins.

Man, the NFC really does stink. The Bears still have a shot I shapot. Unlikely, but still possible.

Actually, I was wrong. The Saints are ahead of the 'Skins so we need them to lose one game. Their remaining games include the Cards, the Eagles, and the Bears. Hopefully they will lose one.
