Skins draft

It's been a week since the draft and not sure what to think about the Skins picks.  It was a little interesting.  It seemed like their approach in many of the picks was to be a little aggressive and get guys that might be somewhat projects but had the potential for big upsides.  Here are my thoughts on each pick:

1. Trent Murphy outside LB from Stanford:  At first, seemed like a strange choice for me given that it did not seem to be a need.  The guy apparently has a great work ethic and motor but still we have Orakpo and Kerrigan at those spots this year.  The only thing I can think of is that both those guys will need to be paid next year and Allen may be willing/forced to let one of them go to protect the cap.  Should Orakpo have a year similar to the way he finished last season, he will want top dollar.  Kerrigan will want something slightly less.  Allen is known to let stars leave because of high price tags.  This will be an interesting development next offseason.

2. Morgan Moses OT from Virginia:  Great pick.  O line was a need and many had Moses as a first or second round guy and a top 5 O lineman in the draft.  He slipped to the Skins in the third round and he is a guy that should compete for a starting position this year and will most likely be a starter next year.

3. Spencer Long OG from Nebraska:  Apparently this guy is a solid player but his stock was hurt because he suffered an ACL injury.  As mentioned, O line is a need and Long has potential.  Hopefully he can work his way up in a year or two.

4. Baushad Breeland CB from Clemson:  Many projected him as a late second-rounder. He came out of school early, and thought if he went back to school he could have been a late first rounder.  He is physical and secondary is a need for the Skins so this is a great pick for me.

5. Ryan Grant WR from Tulane:  Don't know much about the guy but we seem set at WR and he doesn't really seem to possess anything unique (size or speed) from anyone else on the roster.

6. Lache Seastrunk RB from Baylor:  Smaller guy with speed.  Could become a good change of pace back for Morris.  Didn't catch much in college but seems like the hope is that he will become that third down back in the mold of Darren Sproles.  He played with RG3 so there is some familiarity there.  Seems like a good later round pick.

7. Ted Bolser TE from Indiana:  I suppose he will be brought in for potential depth.  Jordan Reed is the starter and Logan Paulsen will be the backup.  We have Niles Paul but Bolser might be able to compete for a spot and could be a potential special teamer.

8. Zach Hocker K from Arkansas:  Seems like the team is okay with Forbath.  Kai can kick FGs pretty well but he is terrible on kickoffs and given that our special teams coverage sucked last year, he is partially to blame for that mess for not being able to ever kick it out of the end zone.  Seems like today all kickers can at least kick it through the end zone a decent percentage of the time.  Kai's leg is just too weak.  Hocker apparently has a strong leg and should at least provide some competition for Forbath.

All in all a pretty good draft.  I'm not thrilled but I'm not thinking it is a disaster.  Frankly, it's hard to tell today whether the draft was good or bad.  We have to wait a couple of years and see how many, if any, of these guys pan out.  The best picks for me have to be Moses and Breeland and they appear to have the most upside and also they fill in positions of need.
