So by now we all know the story and the guy is an idiot for bringing guns to the workplace. He just didn't get it and made light of the situation. Had that incident escalated in the locker room, there may very well have been a gunfight.
Still, if I was part of the Wizards and Gilbert came out and did this when he was introduced, I would have probably burst out laughing too. It's pretty funny.

I agree. It would have taken someone who lacks any sense of humor at all to tell Gilbert, "Gil...What you're doing right now is really insensitive and shows you're not in touch with the magnitude of the situation. I suggest you put your fingers down and sit quietly while this issue gets resolved by the authorities."
I'm not that person and I would have been laughing my arse off if I was on the court with him. That doesn't mean what he did wasn't stupid. He completely deserves the punishment he's getting.
Even now, when I look at that picture, I start chuckling. It's pretty freaking funny.
If it was orchestrated, it would be a shame but if the guy just did this impromptu, no way I keep a straight face. I mean seriously...this little guy gets introduced and stands in the middle and starts making weird faces adn shooting make believe guns. That shat would probably have me laughing even if there was no gun incident in the locker room.
Gil's trouble was that he showed absolutely no remorse even though he clearly violated DC gun laws. He jsut didn't think he did anything wrong and while his joke may have been funny, it was just another example of his total failure to accept responsibility.
Whatever.
Gilbert deserves punishment, but professional sports leagues need to be consistent in their punishment. there are way too many pro ball players that get slaps on the wrists for being abusive to women, drunk driving, etc. And I am not sure I would have laughed. Abe Pollin changed the name of the team from "the Bullets" for a reason.
Vettickal, c'mon, dude. If you were on the court and Gilbert being the nut that he is unexpectedly started shooting fake guns, you would have at least chuckled.
I can agree that there should be some consistency in punishment. Vick got jail time and missed a couple of years for dogfighting (which is terrible) but Leonard Little gets little jail time and misses like half a season for killing someone while he was driving drunk.
