Rock is Back!

Rock Cartwright was looking for a bigger deal and $2M guaranteed. There were no takers and he is back with the 'Skins. Love the pick up since Rock was one of the better kick return guys in the NFL last year. More importantly, he is a leader on the team and he is good at rallying the guys together. He was one of the more important figures after the Sean Taylor tragedy. It was a good move on the 'Skins part.

I actually like the 'Skins approach this year. They didn't go on any kind of spending spree and what is also interesting is it seems that some of the FAs have been grossly overpaid (e.g., Berrian) and some have found that there just isn't a market out there for their services (e.g., Briggs and Cartwright). The 'Skins may see if prices drop and pick some one up but they didn't do what they typically do and go nuts in FA.

I actually feel like we are on the right track.

Good signing w/respect to Rock.

I think you are giving Danny/Vinny way too much credit for controlling their spending. The fact is, the Redskins were forced to calm themeselves down w/respect to free agency. They did not have any cash to be a player.

The future is bleak again next year because of the mess they are in.

The Redskins have redone a bunch of contracts and pushed a lot of their problems into the future (again). They have created some cap room for this year, and are about $7.5M under the cap. You usually have to save about $2.5 million for mid-season signings. So that leaves them with $5 million for draft picks and perhaps a cheaper free agent or two.

They may have to shell out a ton of money for JC if he plays well next year and they are already at $121M against next year's cap with just 35 players signed. Let's assume the cap rises to about $125M next year. They can make a few cuts and get themselves about $10M under the cap, but they would have to sign about 20 more players (including JC) with that money. Bad, bad, bad situation that is worsening each year.

I could go into a lot of detail why, but won't bother right now, because you just want to focus on this year. No problem.

We'll worry about next year, next year. You cry purge every year and it doesn't happen. I will cry when it does happen.

When the salary cap is eliminated in a couple of years, all of this cap stuff won't make any difference.

The cap won't be eliminated unless guys like Snyder and Jerry Jones want to destroy the NFL. There would not be teams in Green Bay, Oakland, Tennessee, New Orleans, etc. if there was no cap.

The NFL would be just like MLB where only large market teams would be able to compete.

The fact is that the Redskins cannot do anything this year and will have the exact same problem next year, only worse. An older team with no money to spend.

You can look from year to year if you like, but I think it is important to consider the longer-term implications of your decisionmaking.

I have no problem with the Bears letting Berrian go because he was not worth the money. There are no grossly overpaid Bears on the squad right now and the team has plenty of money to sign free agents and work out new deals for their key guys.

I agree that we need to focus on the long term. I think not going out and spending this offseason is recognizing that we shouldn't do that. I know that part of that is because we don't have the cap space but what if we had restructured only to bring in Berrian for boat loads of money? We could have made that happen if we wanted. It would have been a mistake. There does seem to be a change in philosophy. We'll see how it pans out. I like that Zorn is ready to work with JC. He seems excited to get started. I like the enthusiasm.

It is better I suppose. I think they should not have reworked so many contracts in order to push back their problems and make them worse down the road.

But if they win, then the system works. I don't think it will work out, but we will just have to see.
