Sandy Hook tragedy

Arms in the US

It's hard for me to discuss what happened.  It's hard to think about what those children experienced in their final moments.  It's hard to think about what the childrens families are going through.  It's hard to think about what the first responders saw in the aftermath.  It's hard to understand what drove Adam Lanza to do what he did.

All that said, some interesting factoids about guns in the U.S. (see the graphic).  So you think it's time to look at the gun laws in the U.S.?

Military grade weapons should not be available to civilians. I think that maybe tighter restrictions should be placed on who can own guns. Ideally id say no guns should be available to anyone but that is unrealistic, so id settle for better gun control laws. As for schools, I think its time for jurisdictions to be funded somehow to contract out private security. What happened on friday is extremely saddening. its tough to get over this and its angering to hear gun supporters clamoring that people need to arm themselves more to prevent things like this from happening.

The whole thing is crazy. In our county, there are security guards on the grounds at the middle and high school levels.

Metal doors are locked at the elementary schools and you have to be granted permission to enter.

What's ridiculous is there are a number of people saying that teachers should be allowed to have guns in their classrooms. Crazy! The idea of a teacher having a weapon in school is a ridiculous idea. What if the teacher snaps and goes off? What if a student steals a gun? That idea would only lead to more tragedies in schools.

Finally, there was a spike in gun sales over the last several days as people are going out and buying their weapons as they are concerned gun laws will change in the future making it more difficult to purchase.

Shocking the world we live in today.
