McNabb signs extension

Contrary to Robs beliefs, the Washington Redskins and quarterback Donovan McNabb have agreed to a five-year, $78 million extension, his agent told The Associated Press.

$40M is guaranteed. I imagine he will be here for the next 3 years.

I like the signing.

STUPID! STUPID! STUPID!

I like McNabb but this is just more of the same sh*t that has kept the Deadskins down since Snyder took over.

As usual, the Deadskins outbid themselves to give a ridiculously bad contract that will only serve to prevent them from signing other free agents.

I am surprised. But, if the Deadskins are going to offer double what the next best offer would be, it is not surprising that McNabb signed.

I had assumed the Deadskins were going to make a reasonable offer because I thought they had actually become a real NFL organization with the new regime. But it looks like Snyder rubbed off on Bruce Allen/Shanny and not the other way around.

SSDD (same sh*t different day). I guess you Deadskin fans can wait for another 2-3 years to start the rebuilding.

Did you look at the terms of the contract? Here it is:

Here is how the rest of the full deal breaks down, according to an NFLPA source:

• 2010: $3.5 million signing bonus/$250,000 if active eight games

• 2011: $10 million option bonus/$2.5 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2012: $12.75 million salary/$750,000 if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2013: $13 million salary/$1.5 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2014: $13.75 million salary/$3 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

• 2015: $13.55 million salary/$2.25 million if active 16 games/$250,000 workout/$2 million possible playoff incentives

It's fine. It's the right move from an organization standpoint. It seems fair for both sides.

Whatever the terms of the agreement, you would find reason to bitch and moan just like the bitch that moans that you are.

The guarranteed amount is all that counts because that is what affects the cap if someone is cut.

If the $40M figure is true it doesn't matter what the yearly terms are.

No one would have given him $40M - just the dopey Deadskins.

It's not entirely clear what he will truly get. A couple of other points to the contract:

One of the contract's most significant points is a payment due this offseason, when the Redskins must decide whether to pay McNabb a $10 million option bonus. If they do, it would trigger the rest of the contract and make Washington liable for McNabb's $2.5 million base salary in 2011.

Also, if the Redskins cut him after the year or trade him, they are only on the hook for the $3.75 million while McNabb has his football freedom.

Bottom line is that it seems to be mutually beneficial for both parties and a little flexible.

If what you say is true, then there is some flexibility if McNabb truly sucks the rest of the year.

However, let's say he is adequate (which I assume you are hoping for). Then the $40M in guaranteed money still kicks in and the contract still sucks.

If he sucks and the Deadskins cut him, they save the money but they lost the draft picks and McNabb will be playing in Arizona or Minnesota or wherever.

It is nice to have the out clause, but assuming the $40M is a real number as has been reported - the contract is still STUPID.

I've read more about the contract and it seems fine for the Deadskins. They pay as long as McNabb performs and they like him. But what I cannot understand is why McNabb signed it.

It gives $3.5M now, and I assume he will be a Deadskin next year. But if the Deadskins draft a franchise QB and decide to cut McNabb they can do so up until the first game of the year next year without much penalty.

If he plays next year and they cut him after next year then there isn't much downside for the Deadskins.

Now I have the opposite view of this contract - that it was a bad deal for McNabb.

It is essentially a one year deal that pays McNabb the average of the top 5 salaries for QBs over the next year. It doesn't really buy him anything and if he were to get cut as a 35 year old QB coming off a weaker year next year (which is likely given their subpar talent around him) he won't get much in a new contract.

At his age and given the state of the Deadskins, I would have tried to secure more guaranteed money. If I didn't get it, I would have tested the free agent market. I suspect there is some "gentleman's agreement" that underlies this contract that we are not seeing. Something is fishy - I suspect we will hear more about this contract in coming years.

It's fine. It is a good deal for both parties and those are the best deals. McNabb seems happy with the contract and to be here. The Redskins seem happy to offer it to him and happy that he is our QB and wanted to show him our commitment to him.

Robs, I believe you wrote (borrowing from a Yahoo article) that the Skins players LOVE McNabb. Not just like but LOVE him. That being the case, it seems to make sense for the Skins to do what they can (within reason) to make a good offer to him.

At least you came around on this one.

I don't see it as a particularly good contract for McNabb. In fact, it doesn't really lock him up so there is still a reasonable chance he will be elsewhere next year.
