The Vikings looked like they were going to commit to AP early on and they seemed to be holding Favre back a bit. When they finally let Favre throw, he looked every bit his 48 years of age. He looked sluggish and when he tried to fire the ball as only Brent could do, it was not on target. He threw another ill advised INT as he was about to get sacked and tried to get rid of the ball. I will say that his TD pass to Shiancoe was a very nice pass but other than that, he looked weathered and beaten and sluggish. Not really what you want to see in the first game of the season. I won't say he lost the game for the Vikings but he certainly didn't do anything to put them in a position to win it either.
Look, Brent Favre is one of the greatest QBs to play the game. I don't discount that. I will also say that he had a very good year last year after struggling in his one year with the Jets. However, I think what we saw from him last night is more typical of what we will see from him this year. The Vikings are not as good as they were last year and I don't know how committed Grandpa Brent is to playing.
I used to be a Favre fan. I loved his passion for the game but the last few seasons I just don't get it. The guy can't seem to make up his mind whether he wants to play or not and he expects the world to stop as he spends the entire offseason trying to figure it out. Once he decides to come back, he expects everything including $15M handed to him on a silver platter.
It's too bad because had he stayed retired when he originally retired (which seems like an eternity ago), he would have gone down as one of the most decorated, celebrated, beloved players in NFL history. What has happened now is that he has become a very polarizing and divisive character. He will most certainly be a HOFer in his first year of eligibility but had he stayed retired, that celebration in Canton would have been something to see. I could imagine the entire state of Wisconsin coming out to see him enshrined. Now, I am sure there are Packer fans that wouldn't even want to see him go in as a Packer.
Brent is entitled to do what he wants to do and that's what he has shown. Favre is all about Favre.

It is over. Last year was a magical year, but things won't fall into place like they did last year.
He'll make $25M this year, the Vikings won't make the playoffs, and he'll fade away.
Favre won't last the year. Especially if the season starts to tank, he'll pack it in and we should see Tavaris. In fact, I don't think Favre's body will hold up this year.
He should have retired, but $25M is a pretty big incentive.
He was out of sync with his receivers last night and that has a lot to do with him showing up at the last minute...But it also is a product of Rice not being there as the #1 receiver. The passing game isn't working right now, but it's not all due to Favre's age/sluggishness/etc. Schiancoe was his only reliable target last night and that's not going to cut it against one of the league's best teams.
I'll wait a few more weeks before I pass judgment on Favre. He accepted blame for the bad throws last night, but I don't think it was all his fault.
Lets take a look at the whole picture.
Favre is a Legend, he has earned that title, and can make up his mind as he wants. Not his fault that the media cant get enough of him and keeps feeding his personal business to the public. Anyone that wants to win by using his services has to deal with it. The Vikings knew what they were getting. Deal with Favre's decision making for a chance to play in the NFC championship.
Its a TEAM game and Favre was there to Play as much as anyone else like he always has. As for the one year with the Jets. NEW OFFENSIVE SCHEME, NEW COACH, NEW RECEIVERS, NEW TEAMMATES, NEW ENVIRONMENT...and he still threw 22 TDS and over 3500yards. (tell me any Redskins QB over the past 15 years thats thrown over 22 tds?????)
At one point the JETS were the NUMBER 2 team in the AFC sitting at 8-3 just behind the titans whom the JETS just beat in tennessee. Then unfortunately Favre got injured, but still continued to play...(id take an injured favre over kellen clements any day).
There will be losses. But there will be MORE wins as favres career has always proved. And Im sorry but the Saints being the SUPERBOWL CHIMPS didnt look THAT great against the Vikings. 14-9 isnt exactly a Convincing Victory. Its just the first game of the season.

It was just SEVEN (7, S-E-V-E-N, half a year + one month) months ago that Favre was hailed as the ONLY runner up for the LEAGUE MVP to Peyton Manning .
It would be kinda ignorant to count him out already.
It's one game and it's possible that he may come back and have an incredible rest of the year. I just don't think that will happen.

Deeps, you're right in that it is hard to get in sync with receivers when you show up at the last minute. Again, shows his selfishness. If you want to truly to what is best for the team, you should be there for practice. If his ankle was the only concern about him playing during the offseason, why not get treatment up in Minnesota? I am sure their doctors and facilities are excellent. Then he could also be around the guys and at least study the playbook and watch film and just be a presence assuming he was unable to take the field for practice.
The problem with Favre is that it is all about him. He wants to play but only under his terms.
I wouldn't count Favre out, but I also wouldn't count on Favre having anywhere close to the year he had last year. He'll end up with 19 TDs and 19 INTs which won't be good enough for the Viqueens to really be a serious threat to win a Super Bowl.
JSR, no one is disputing that Favre is a legend. He is one of the greatest QBs to have played the game. I also agree that any team that wants to put up with his B.S. and allow him to play by his rules than so be it. That is their choice.
The problem with him is that he is a selfish arse. As mentioned, he will play but only under his terms. He will show up when he feels like showing up.
In NY, yeah, he started out good but he finished up 1-4 and threw 2 TDs vs. 10 INTs. After sucking down the stretch and blowing their playoff hopes, he tells the media he has a tear in the biceps. Why not say that earlier? You say that you would rather have Favre with a tear in the arm over Clemens. I would disagree. In fact, even leaders on his own team were ticked off that he played knowing he had the tear. Thomas Jones went on the radio and hammered Favre for putting himself before the team. That is Favre's M.O.
As far as the Saints being the "Chimps," I don't know what you are talking about. They were outstanding last year and deserved to be world champions. They look to be formidable again this year and I fully expect them to make a strong push in the playoffs again this year (barring injuries to key players).
Favre did have a good year last year. He was surrounded by a very good team. My general thoughts (and I may end up being wrong) are that the Vikings are not as good as last year and Favre will not be very good.
We'll see what happens.
