Sucks. You have to wonder about the true ability of Ovechkin. He is a great player, but he may not be in the same class as Sid, Gretzky, Mario, etc. He may be like Karl Malone, Barkley, Ewing, etc.
Frankly, the stars didn't shine for the Caps throughout the series, the role players did their jobs for the most part. The goalies were solid - certainly they did not lose the series. Mike Green made horrible mistakes again last night. Semin was jinxed throughout the series. Ovechkin had his chances in Games 5-7 to show that he was a guy who could carry a team - and he didn't.
If Pittsburgh goes on the win again, it will just put that much more distance between Ovechkin and Sid.
Agreed Rob. I thought we had some tough guys that were going to crash the net. Unfortunately, either they were told to continue to play their regular season style or they are not capable of playing more of the playoff style. Boudreau said that he would have bet his house that they wouldn't have lost three straight to Habs. It seems as though he was over confident. He said that the four stars: Ovie, Backstrom, Semin, and Green were distraught in the locker room. Well, they should feel even worse than that. If you shoot and they consistently block your shots as you come through the zone, you need to move to a more dump and run strategy and forecheck to potentially get off quicker shots. The Caps didn't do that and tried to move it to the point every time. Often, their defenders disrupted whatever shooting chance we may have had. I think if they have a similar performance in the playoffs next year, Boudreau will be back in the minors. On the bright side, at least we didn't have to watch another OT game.
I'm not so sure that Ovie was the problem and that this series puts him a notch below Sid, etc. Ovie scored 5 goals and had additional assists. He had a goal stolen from him in game 7. He did his part on the ice. He may be lacking as a captain though. Captains should be more assertive and more in charge of the team. We don't know what happens in the locker room, but we never heard about Ovie getting in Semin's face to tell him to wake up or whether or not he pimp-slapped Green for the stupid plays that cost the team games. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt though. He's young and he's only been captain for half of a season.
I agree with Scott. The problem was the offensive philosophy. All we did was shoot from the blue line and get those shots blocked by the Habs' defenders. We brought Knuble in to be a presence in front of the net, but he can't do it himself. There were too many rebounds and loose pucks in front of the net where we didn't have anyone there to knock it into the net. This approach didn't change in any of the last three games. We just kept shooting long shots and hoping to get them through. It doesn't work that way in the playoffs.
I'm interested to see what changes in the off-season. It's a bummer. It's not even May yet and all we have to hold us over until football season is baseball now...At least the Nats are playing better than expected.
Come on Paul, you're are going to have to start writing blogs again. The Caps season is over. There are so many great things to write about in the world of sports, like the following: The new Rothlisberger article that is coming out taking about what a dumb ass he is, or Tiger actually practicing his swing instead of felatio, or the Skins releasing Marko Mitchell who was then claimed by the Lions. There goes another draft pick, all be it only a 7th round pick. Come on, get back in the saddle!

Until next year I suppose.
