Cedric the Entertainer!

More trouble for Cedric Benson. Benson was arrested Saturday on a drunken driving charge in Austin, Texas, his second arrest in little more than a month. It was 2 am and he failed a field sobriety test. Not surprisingly, Benson told his lawyer that he thought he ran a yellow light and that he didn't think he was driving recklessly or speeding. He also told his lawyer that he had two or three drinks with dinner and that he didn't think he was intoxicated.

Again, this all sounds kind of funny to me. First, you can't remember if you had two or three drinks. It's one thing if you have seven or eight drinks and can't remember the number but two or three drinks? Also, what time did they have dinner? Even if you had dinner around 10 pm, it seems like the effects of two or three drinks with food would wear off and not result in a DWI (worse than a DUI). Also, he failed the field sobriety test. Lastly, knowing the problems you have had with the Bears and the case he is currently involved in, wouldn't he know better? That guy is an idiot.

Idiot, yes. He shouldn't have been out late having dinner with his Mom, or whatever. But, it is not clear that he was actually drunk.

Here is the bottom line. Benson has lost 10 pounds and on the field he apparently has increased his speed. If he can perform on the field, fans (and I) won't care about his transgressions. He hasn't done any damage except to himself - and again it is not clear he has actually been drunk. For those errors he can be forgiven if he performs.

You got to love his mug shot. I'm glad he thinks the whole thing is funny. The guy is a HUGE idiot. Seriously. For a guy wanting to clean up his reputation and try to win over the fans and the coaches and teammates that supported him after the boating incident, this is not the way to do it.

He got caught running a red light after 3 am in the heart of Austin's night life district. Why not call a cab or a limo just to be sure? He failed an abbreviated field sobriety test and declined a breathalyer and blood alcohol test. If he was truly innocent, why did he decline it? If he had accepted it and it had come out the way Ced thought it would, he would be exonerated.

The guy was already on a short leash and he is proving that if you give him enough rope, he will hang himself.

You're right though. If he can prove that he is a great runner on the field, some of this will fall by the wayside. However, given his past, what we know about the guy, and the lingering issues with the Bears line, I don't see him having a great year. He will struggle early and the fans are going to be all over him. I'm sure with this last incident, his coaches and teammates are ticked off at him. The overwhelming reaction from the fans on the Trib's blog is that they should get rid of him.

The Bears may be looking to get Lamont Jordon, Mike Brown, Shaun Alexander, or Kevin Jones as a result of Ced's issues. I actually like Jones. He is a strong and young runner. He is coming off some tough injuries but they could get him for cheap so the upside is there. We'll see what they do.

Benson is a young player who has been very average. If he performs then fine.

I don't find either of the incidents to be too serious, and frankly, he may have just been targeted and given trumped up charges.
