HOF #81

So I was driving into work today and I saw a Redskins license plate with the following: HOF 81.

It is amazing to me that Monk has not gotten into the HOF as of yet. The guy had the following stats:

Among the league's all-time top 50 in:
Receptions: 6
Receiving yards: 11
Receiving TDs: 29t
Yards from scrimmage: 26
Consecutive games with at least one reception: 2(183)
All-Rookie: 1980
3-time Pro Bowler: 1984, 1985, 1986
2-time All-Pro: 1984, 1985

Keep in mind that he played in a running offense led by John Riggins AND when he ended his career, he was a leader OR higher up in many of the statistics listed above. Today, passing is more prevalent and WRs are getting a lot more opportunities to catch balls than they did in Monk's era.

It's a shame he has not gotten in the HOF yet. Hopefully his time is this year.

He is one of the greatest ever - on and off the field. He deserves to be in the Hall and anyone who argues against him is a flat out idiot.

Nice to see RobsObs give a Redskin his just due. I guess was back when RobsObs was a 'Skin fan. Deep down I still think RobsObs has some burgundy and gold in his blood.

Couldn't agree with you guys more. It's a sin that he hasn't been inducted yet.

Thanks for not bashing this hero of mine.

Matar, Monk was the consummate pro both on and off the field. He performed at a high level but never looked for the spot light. In a way, that may be part of the issue with him not getting into the HOF yet. Maybe if he had been more "flashy," he would have gotten the vote. Still, he did not compromise himself and for that he deserves our respect. As a Redskin fan, I am a huge supporter of Monk and I hope he gets his just due.

As far as Stabone...he served his purpose and there is not question that he is an icon and provided great entertainment but his time is done. Also, I have lost A LOT of respect for the man for abusing illegal drugs. He has compromised himself in an effort to hold on to a fledgling acting career. I don't respect that.

I could learn to like the Redskins again - WHEN SNYDER IS GONE.

Monk was from a great era of Redskin domination and class - he embodied that team. He is deserving from any objective point of view.

As for the Redskins, today's organization is not that organization that I once loved.

Monk was, and still is the man...I got the shake his hand once and got his autograph back in the early 90s.

If you've lost so much respect for Stallone for roidin' up then have you also lost respect for WWE entertainers? Baseball players? Floyd Landis?

That's correct, Matar. First, I have never respected WWE entertainers. I don't respect Jason Giambi, Barry Bonds, or any other baseball player who has abused illegal drugs. Sure, the claim can be made that taking steroids and/or HGH doesn't help you hit a curve ball. Well then, why take it? There is no question in my mind that Bonds has been abusing HGH. Not only has Bonds muscles gotten bigger but his head size has grown, his foot size has grown, etc. Clear indications that he was abusing HGH. I mean come on...at 40+ years of age how does your hat size grow from when you were 30, ESPECIALLY when you now shave your head?! I don't respect those players because they are engaging in illegal activity to try and cheat the sport. They are CHEATERS! The same is true with Landis. He CHEATED! How do you respect that? He participated in the greatest cycling event in the world and cheated. How is that fair?

Matar, let me ask you, do you respect those "athletes?"

matar-alloo said...

No, I don't respect those athletes for exactly the same reason. They cheated in a sport and therefore had an unfair advantage over the other players. Their actions have tarnished the sports they participate in...

For WWE wrestlers, I think it's not quite as bad because these guys are paid to be huge...they probably all use steroids so therefore nobody's at an unfair advantage.

For Sly, he's an actor. He's not cheating anyone because what he does is not a direct competition with anyone else. But, he shouldn't be using steroids...it's stupid and it's gonna make his head explode if he keeps going.

To answer your question about why would baseball players use steroids if it doesn't make you hit the ball any more effectively...I was reading an article in ESPN magazine about this very question. Apparently, it's all about recovery time. These guys work their bodies so hard and put their muscles through such stress that they want to be able to keep working them game after game after game. Steroids help muscles recover so that these guys can go train the day after a tough game, whereas ordinarily they'd have to rest for a few days. According to that article, pitchers would benefit from this the most because every time they throw the ball, they're essentially throwing their arms out of their sockets and really causing themselves injury over time.

All that said, I don't condone the use of steroids in professional sports. Like you said, it's cheating and it tarnishes the sports they participate in.
