Washington Warriors?

So there has been some increased discussion recently about the Redskins name.  A few native American leaders have been camped out at the same hotel as the one the NFL owners are meeting at this week conducting their own meetings regarding the name.  Even President Obama mentioned that if he was the owner, he would consider a name change.

That said, I don't think the name is going to change any time soon.  However, if it were to change, I actually like the Washington Warriors.  Still, not sure if the logo needs to change.  Seems like it is only the term "Redskins" that is being asked to change.  Frankly, if the logo is being asked to change than I would imagine the Chicago Blackhawks logo would have to change as well since it is nearly identical.

Again, I would be fine with the Washington Warriors and keeping everything else the same.  I like the name Redskins and view it as a positive term and a tribute to native Americans but I am not a native American and I certainly don't want to disparage or hurt people.  Will be interesting to see if the native Americans can gain any more traction and if anything comes from it.

It is going to change - the question is, When?

Snyder's letter was a self-serving piece of crap. He cites "studies" like the Annenberg study - but when you read the methodology that was used in that study it calls into question the results. The Annenberg study called people randomly across the country and asked them if they were Native American. If they said they were then they asked about the Deadskin name issue. I would not allow my doctoral students to use this type of methodology because of the obvious reliability and validity issues.

One can always use anecdotal evidence to support a position, but in the end, the continued support for a blatantly racist moniker is unlikely.

Will Snyder lead and change the name, or will he be forced to as the criticism and protests grow more pronounced?

They will change the name. Just a matter of when the sponsors start pulling away from the team. Weve seen this issue continuously growing. From native Americans to now the President to sports writters like Peter King who refuse to use the name. Its growing. Its just a matter of time before it starts effecting Dan the Man financially when sponsors dont want to be known to be associated with an offensive name. The name to us represents a football team and greatness and honor but that does not change the fact that the name is very offensive in the eyes of those to whom the name refers to. Danny should change the name and show some good faith. Maybe id genuinely root for him a little bit then.

I don't know if I would "root for him" but it would be a good thing.

I am sick of people arguing that the name cannot change because of tradition and who also say "Redskins" is not racist. It is simply a fact that "Redskins" was used as a derogatory and racist term.

Certainly most of the fans of the team and probably even the owner are not racist - but the term is racist by its very definition.

The NCAI put out a report which also includes the history of term: CLICK HERE

Will be interesting on Sunday night as the Oneida tribe plans on airing a commercial about the name with the clip from Obama.

Me, personally, as I've mentioned, I like the "Redskins" as it is what I have known but I am not so tied to it that I want to offend a large number of people. I'd be fine with a name change. Given the change in players regularly and with uniforms every few years, I don't think people would care that much anymore. However, I would like to see the colors/logo remain. I wouldn't want something radically different. Again, I'm for Washington Warriors and keep everything the same.

Again, if they are asking us to change the logo then it's only right that the Blackhawks change their logo.

I don't know if the logo is offensive. I think that its more just about the name. I think it would be fine if you had the Skins current logo and the name Warriors attached to that logo. I don't know if Blackhawks is an offensive name or that they have an offensive logo. I do think Indians with a combination of their logo would be considered more offensive. I dont know though. I'd have to ask a native american. Its interesting that the Oneida tribe is airing a commercial this very weekend with it being Columbus day on Monday. I can't believe there's a federal holiday for this guy.

Just call them the Washington Weirdos and put a picture of Snyderatto (melding of Snyder and Vinny Cerrato) on the helmet. Add a big Chris Cooley type afro look and you got a winner.

Keep the colors they way they are, just change from an Indian to the logo described above.

GO WEIRDOS GO!!!!!
