CAA this week

The CAA is the premier conference in the FCS with a number of its teams ranked in the top 10. This week there are two stellar games with #3 ranked JMU hosting #5 ranked Delaware. Also, #7 ranked William and Mary hosting #1 ranked and reigning national champions Villanova.

What I love about JMU's schedule is it seems like each and every week we play a ranked opponent. Sure, it would be nice to have some softies on the schedule but instead of softies, we choose FBS opponents like VA Tech.

GO DUKES!!!

Will McNabb be cheered on jeered on Sunday?

Quarterback Donovan McNabb expects to receive a mostly warm reception Sunday from fans in Philadelphia when he faces his former team for the first time, he said in a radio interview Tuesday.

"Honestly, I think that I would be cheered. More cheered than booed," McNabb said during "The Donovan McNabb Show" on ESPN 980. "No matter what the situation is right now, that I'm with a different team and obviously it's kind of a rival, and it wasn't by my choice.

"But the whole deal about it was 11 years. It was a successful 11 years. And you had a lot of great times, a lot of great moments [and] a lot of exciting plays. Obviously, some down times, but you have that in the NFL. But there's more exciting things that happened in 11 years."

I have to believe that if the Eagle fans have even the slightest bit of class that they would cheer for McNabb in his return. The guy is the most prolific QB in their history and he did not leave by his choice. It will truly be a shame if they boo.

Devastating!

Skins lose yesterday to the Rams. The Rams are much improved but it's still a game we needed to win. Outside of the second quarter, it was pretty much an embarrassment. The first 7-8 minutes were atrocious. We just weren't ready to play.

The Rams first TD was horrible. First, they marched it down the field with relative ease and then Steven Jackson breaks a 42 yarder with a TERRIBLE play by Kareem Moore. The guy flew up to meet Jackson but didn't break down and Jackson did a simple side step and Moore was out of the picture. Maybe Moore was just really excited to be back but still that is tackling 101 and it cost us big time.

Redskins have to punt on our first drive and Gano had to do the punting since Bidwell hurt himself in warmups and was crying off the field...literally. Gano's first punt was blocked setting up a short field for the Rams who took advantage and quickly jumped out to a 14 point lead.

Redskins next drive starts out okay but then Moss fumbles on a crossing route and turns it back over to the Rams. The Rams next play is an INT where Bradford threw it over the middle but Moore made a nice play to get the INT.

It was at this point that the Skins started looking good. We had nice runs and nice passes and were able to put up 13 points pretty quickly. Still, it was disappointing because we seem to be settling for FGs when we need TDs too often.

We had a great goal line stand before the half and were able to block the Rams short FG try sending us to halftime down 14-13 but all the momentum. We opened up the second half with a deep ball to Moss but again had to settle for a FG but took the lead 16-14. At that point, the game totally changed and we were dominated and lost 30-16.

Here are a couple of specifics:

1. What was CP doing on that long run when he just fell down? This is the NFL and you are a running back, you don't just slide like a QB! He is not afraid of contact as we have seen him lay down some heavy blocks but what was that?!!! Then he didn't seem to play too much after that so not sure what was going on there.

2. The deep ball to Galloway in the end zone was pass interference. Too bad.

3. We have got to find a secondary WR. Outside of Moss, there is no other threat.

4. I like Devin Thomas a a KR but would love to see him as a WR. He has the size and speed to be something decent. I understand there is a whole lot more than size and speed but we are not getting anything from anyone else so he certainly can't hurt if given the opportunity.

5. Defense was ATROCIOUS!!!! We could not stop the Rams the entire second half. I felt like the Rams offense was out there the entire second half and we never got the ball. It reminded me a lot of our defenses the last couple of years where when it was time for a stop, we just couldn't get it done. How many freaking times did Bradford do that short/quick pass or find the guy in the soft zone for positive yards? The thing that bothers me most about those plays is that I felt like we were truly outcoached. One of the biggest strengths I felt about our team was our coaching and I just felt like we were thoroughly outcoached there. I mean, you want to send pressure fine. Then you want guys playing off the receivers. Well, Bradford (a rookie) recognized it and wanted to get the ball out quickly and was able to complete because guys were playing off. Fine, it happens once or twice but eventually you think we would have figured it out. Nope. It happened all game. What is that about?!!!

Also, in the second half, it was clear that the Rams made defensive adjustments and started sending pressure on McNabb. We didn't adjust and we suffered. Have more help in protection. Keep a TE back or have a RB back to help out with blocking. Where was CP in the second half? He is a great blocker and excellent at picking up blitzes.

6. What happened to the running game? We were fairly effective with the run and we just seemed to abandon it. Kyle Shanny calls the plays and I have a feeling listening to Mike Shanny in post game conferences that he wants to run more but at the same time, he is doing the right thing by giving control to Kyle and not interfering with his job. Kyle is a young, smart guy and understands that in today's NFL you need to pass to win but that doesn't mean you ignore the run game particularly when you are having some success. I just felt like we should have mixed it up a little more.

Like I said, the worst part about yesterday was that we were dominated in the second half and I really felt like we were outcoached and that I feel is one of our biggest strengths so that is what I found to be most disappointing.

Next week, we go to Philly and take on a rejuvenated Michael Vick who is playing out of his mind and a tough Philly team. A win and we are right back on top of the NFC East. A loss and it will mount many more questions about the Redskins.

Skins prediction

After a tough loss last week in which we had the game won but found ways to lose, we head to St. Louis to face a much improved Rams team.

I fully expect to win this game and win by at least 10 points. The Rams are improved but we are still better. Here are the keys to the game:

1. Pressure Bradford. He has been impressive so far as a rookie but he is still a rookie. We need to attack him and force him to make mistakes. I expect to get at least 2 INTs.

2. Running game has got to get going. After releasing LJ, CP is the undisputed starter and needs to perform like it. The O line also needs to help by giving holes for him to run through. I believe this will happen this week as CP runs for 100 yards.

3. McNabb needs to continue his great play. There is no reason to think otherwise but he has quickly become a leader of this team and I love that we take the shots downfield.

In the end, the Rams will hold on tough for a little while but the Skins will win 27 to 13.

Brett Favre's Final Chance

Good article on Yahoo.

Brett Favre(notes) swears this is his final season in the NFL and based on his performance thus far – four picks, two losses, one touchdown, zero victories – it should be. He’s been terrible; looking every bit like a soon-to-be 41-year-old who skipped most of training camp and thought he could just wing it.

But applying absolutes to Favre or his career is dangerous. The same arrogance/confidence that can ruin him – overly daring passes, lack of practice – has also served as his escape route from trouble.

More From Dan WetzelHappy ending for most of Vick's dogs Sep 21, 2010 If Moss wants deal he must leave Revis Island Sep 17, 2010 AdChoices
“If I sat here and told you that I knew exactly what we’re doing right now I’d be lying,” Favre told reporters Thursday. “A lot of work is left and it will be an ongoing process until we have our unit how we want to go about things and we’re not there yet.”

Favre should’ve taken part in the entire Vikings training camp rather than showing up more than halfway through. Hanging out in Hattiesburg, Miss. until the team begged, pleaded and even sent teammates to haul him back to the Twin Cities was a mistake. He needed to work on his game before the third preseason game.

The Vikings didn’t just accept Favre’s late arrival, it had spent a year-plus empowering him to the point where he felt entitled to it. So the franchise is as much to blame as the QB here. Two games into the regular season, the starter shouldn’t be wondering what the offense is doing. As a result, Favre says he’s pressing.

“It’s hard to be patient and try to get this puzzle pieced together, because we’re doing it as we play,” he said. “Next week, it could be different. The following week, it could be different. Who knows? We need to score points. I can play a lot better.”

There’s no going back to August. All the Vikings can do is count on their quarterback to figure it out while the season plays out. It makes the upcoming stretch critical if Favre personally, and the Vikings as a whole, are going to turn around this spiraling season.

On Sunday the Vikings host the Detroit Lions, a team currently on a 2-33 run, 0-18 when facing Favre on his home field and fresh off making Michael Vick(notes) look so good the Philadelphia Eagles blew up their entire master plan for the future.

This is the last chance to reset the season. If it doesn’t happen, if Favre is the same slowed, struggling mess and the Vikings’ offense follows suit then you can write Favre’s final year off. After the bye comes a murderers’ row of at New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, at Green Bay and at New England. By the end of that, it’ll be too late.

It’s now or never for the last stand of Brett Favre.

My take is that it is over for Brett. He is going to continue to be terrible as the Vikings struggle and he will regret coming back as he further mars his already tarnished legacy.

Another question...

How many batteries does it take to beat VA Tech?

Question

When you go to a Japanese Steakhouse, does anyone really enjoy at the end of the cooking when the chef chops up a shrimp and tosses it at you so that you can catch it in your mouth?

And the winner is...

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

It was a tough choice as they had a great selection. I considered the following:

1. Modelo Especial - really enjoy this beer but I like it more in the spring/summer and it was a 1/4 barrel and they had quite a few selection in the 1/6 barrel size so I deferred on this one for now.

2. Sam Adams Oktoberfest - I just finished the Sam Adams Summer Ale so I wanted to branch out from the Sam Adams family this go around. Also, I am not sure if I have tried the Oktoberfest and wasn't sure how I would like it so didn't want to get a keg of it.

3. Harpoon Oktoberfest - I like Harpoon but similar to the Sam Adams Oktoberfest, it is an unknown and didn't want to get a keg of something without having an idea of what it tasted like.

4. Dogfish Pumpkin Ale - Dogfish is quality beer and the alcohol content was much higher in this seasonal ale (I believe around 7% - 8%). However, pumpkin ale is a distinct taste/flavor and would probably rather have a few bottles of this as opposed to a keg.

5. Miller Lite - good fall back beer but they had too many varieties for me to consider this one this time.

After much internal debate, I ended up with the Sierra Nevada as it is a quality Pale Ale and a known quantity. It is a nice fall beer that has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. Generous quantities of premium Cascade hops give the Pale Ale its fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor.

After tapping the keg last night, I poured myself half a glass. It is slightly bitter so Scott will wuss out on this one but I can appreciate and enjoy savoring this beer as opposed to a Miller Lite which can be chugged.

Stay thirsty, my friends!

Kevin Kolb

Strange how quickly things can change in the NFL. In the offseason, the Iggles parted ways with their perennial Pro Bowl QB of the last decade, Donovan McNabb, and sent him packing to a divisional rival. They handed over the keys to Kevin Kolb and were entrusting him to be the guy that follows the guy who owns most every Iggle quarterbacking stat. They were pumping up Kolb and the national media even joined in saying the Kolb had what it took to play in the NFL. He had good accuracy and this and that.

In the first half of his first start this season, Kolb suffered a concussion. In comes Michael Vick who tears it up and nearly beats the Packers. Last week, Vick played very well putting up 30+ points as the Iggles beat the Lions. Kolb got healthy and it seemed like the job was his and he would get the start this coming week but today Andy Reid stated that Vick is going to get the start. Now there are reports of many teams inquiring about trading for Kolb.

That's the funny thing about the NFL. Things can change drastically for players, coaches, and the entire team in one week.

Keg's dry

Finished my keg of Sam Adams Summer Ale watching the Skins game the other day so I am in need of replenishment. Going to head over to the store today to replenish. Not sure what they have right now but I am always happy to look at what's new. May just end up with Miller Lite as it is a nice safe beer of decent quality. Will update on what I pick tomorrow.

Skins lose a heartbreaker

Tough loss on Sunday. It was an incredibly entertaining game but it's unfortunate that we came out on the short end. These are games we have to learn to put away and get the win if we expect to be a good team. Still, it is clear we have come a LONG way from last year. I loved how aggressive we were the entire game. I loved that we took a number of shots downfield.

What hurts is that there were at least 4 plays that I can think of that if they go our way, the game is over. They include:

1. The short FG that was blocked. What was Davis doing? Sure, he had two guys that he had to worry about but he barely got a hand on the dude on the end that got the block. He did the same thing against Dallas where he missed his block and his guy got CP. Davis really needs to shore up his blocking game.

2. Galloway's missed bomb. Great throw by McNabb and it's a pass Galloway has to catch. Looked like he had a chance just running but he should've dove if he needed to. That was a very catchable ball and one that if he does catch, it lights up the stadium and puts the game away.

3. Schaub's 4th and 10 completion to Johnson with 2 minutes left. Schaub was under pressure and took a hit just as he threw it. It was a jump ball and Johnson came down with it. First, Buchanon was playing man on man but he released and gave way to Doughty. However, Buchanon released too early and frankly if there is one guy you want to stay with it is Johnson. Second, it was a jump ball and Doughty had a poor effort. I understand Johnson is arguably the best WR in the game right now but Doughty barely got off the ground. It wasn't the type of play where the DB is running with the WR and has to turn around to defend. It was a jump ball and all Doughty has to do is put his arm up and jump as high as he can and knock it down and he just didn't get it done. We need Kareem Moore.

4. Gano's FG in OT that didn't count because of the timeout. Great move by Kubiak and it's a tough FG so it was no gimme but it's unfortunate that he couldn't hit it again.

Again, great game and there are a lot of positives that came from this game. Here are some random thoughts about the game.

1. McNabb was awesome. I was a big JC fan but it is clear the difference in play. McNabb has a coolness about him where he can see the play happen quicker and adjust accordingly. McNabb is not afraid to throw downfield and take shots. No question he is a leader on this team. Love his play so far.

2. The running game has got to get going. We can't rely on McNabb alone. I am confident it will come but want to see it. I love being aggressive in play calling and there is no question you have to pass to win in the NFL today but would like to see a bit more running.

3. Defense had decent pressure and got a number of sacks and a turnover but the secondary needs to tighten up. WAY too many yards passing for Schaub.

Not much else. It was a good game against one of the better teams in the NFL and certainly one of the best offenses in the NFL. We held them to 10 points in the first half but when you are up 27-10 with 18 minutes left, we have to put that game away. We are still in transition so while difficult to take, it's understandable but hopefully we learn a number of lessons from this game and it makes us better.

Redskins prediction

PAIN!!!

The Texans are coming off of one of their biggest wins in franchise history with their win over the Colts. Also, Arian Foster had a monster game with 200+ yards rushing.

Meanwhile, the Skins showed a much more aggressive defense and was able to contain the Cowboys and hang on for a 13-7 victory at home.

Makes for a good matchup on Sunday afternoon.

Call me crazy, but I like the Skins in this one. I'm sure much of my pick is coming from my heart but I like them for the following reasons:

1. Our defense will have some issues with the running game but Foster won't have the same type of game he had against the Colts. Also, the defense will create at least 2 turnovers.

2. Our running game will be much better this week. CP will be around the 100 yard game this week.

3. Our passing game will pick up and McNabb will throw his first TD pass of the season.

4. Our O line will do a good job against the Texans.

5. Our coaching staff will put our players in the best position to be successful. This is one of biggest advantages is that our staff is smart, experienced, and in Sunday's case very familiar with Kubiak and the Texans and we will exploit them.

6. Special teams will be special. Devin Thomas will have more good returns and will possibly break one. Coverage teams will be outstanding.

7. Finally, the crowd was electric on Sunday and they were a difference maker and I expect the same type of atmosphere this Sunday. They will play a part in this.

In the end. I expect a 23 - 16 win for the Redskins.

HAIL SKINS!!!

New Movie coming out: SLY VS ARNY VS CHUCK VS VAN DAMME TWINS

This one is for you Matar!

CP's comments

CP has been relatively quiet this entire offseason but he made news yesterday with the comments regarding women reporters in the locker room. He said, "I think you put women reporters in the locker room in position to see guys walking around naked, and you sit in the locker room with 53 guys, and all of the sudden you see a nice woman in the locker room. I think men are going to tend to turn and look and want to say something to that woman," Portis said in his weekly appearance on 106.7 The Fan.

Stupid comments to say in the public but I'm sure the vast majority of players think the same way. I'm sure despite his apology CP believes in his comments.

JMU ranked #3

JMU soars to #3 with 30 first place votes in the latest polls after their big upset of VT. That's up nine spots from last week. JMU even got 11 points in the FBS rankings.

Good article on ESPN regarding last week's game:

The night before James Madison University pulled off the biggest upset of the 2010 college football season, Dukes coach Mickey Matthews asked his players if any of them made a recruiting visit to Virginia Tech.

None of the Dukes raised his hand.

Matthews' promise proved prophetic as the Dukes did the unimaginable Saturday, shocking the No. 13 Hokies 21-16 at Lane Stadium. It was Virginia Tech's first home loss to a Football Championship Subdivision foe since falling to Richmond 24-14 in 1985.

"The dirty little secret is the top six to eight teams at our level can play with anyone," Matthews said. "We struggle to find guaranteed games because no one wants to play us. I don't know if we're a Top 25 team on the FBS level, but I'm sure we're better than Virginia Tech wanted us to be. They needed to play somebody they could dominate."

More and more, FBS teams are having difficulty beating FCS foes, let alone dominating them. FBS teams looking for easy victories might have more luck scheduling New Mexico than FCS teams like James Madison.

In the first two weeks of the season alone, five FCS teams have defeated FBS opponents: Jacksonville (Ala.) State stunned Ole Miss 49-48 in two overtimes, North Dakota State beat Kansas 6-3, South Dakota defeated Minnesota 41-38, Gardner-Webb beat Akron 38-37 in overtime and Liberty shocked Ball State 27-23.

It was the second time in as many seasons that James Madison had an ACC opponent on the ropes. In their 2009 opener, the Dukes led Maryland 35-28 late in the second half before losing 38-35 in overtime.

"There are great players, no matter what league or what division," James Madison quarterback Drew Dudzik said. "We've got great players. We just don't have the same number of scholarships and don't have the depth. It just goes to show that on any given day anyone can beat anyone."

Appalachian State proved that point when it stunned Michigan 34-32 at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 1, 2007.

"I think when Appalachian State beat Michigan, you didn't hear any football coaches saying it was a big upset," Matthews said. "You heard a lot of media saying it was the greatest upset in college football history, but you didn't hear any football coaches saying it."

Matthews believed his team would have a chance to be competitive against the Hokies, who were playing their second game in six days. Virginia Tech lost to No. 3 Boise State 33-30 on Labor Day night.

"The biggest thing when you play Virginia Tech is surviving the first quarter," Matthews said. "They blow everybody out in the first quarter at Lane Stadium. I told the kids, 'Let's make sure it's a game at the end of the first quarter. Let's survive the noise and the crowd.' I told them we weren't playing the concrete and their fans."

The Dukes trailed Virginia Tech 7-0 after the first quarter and were behind 13-7 at the half.

When Matthews walked back on to the field for the second half, he told his coaches the Dukes had a chance to win the game.

"I don't know if we're going to beat them, but it's going to be close," Matthews told his coaches. "Our kids believe they can beat them."

After falling behind 16-7, James Madison took the lead for good after Dudzik scored on two touchdown runs.

"We've got a great bunch of guys, and we've all bought into the program," Dudzik said. "All week we believed we could win, and we believed we could win throughout the whole game. We believed we were going to win the game."

The Dukes might have defeated more than Virginia Tech on Saturday, too. Their stunning upset of the Hokies also put a dent in Boise State's chances of playing in the BCS National Championship Game.

The Broncos' come-from-behind victory over Virginia Tech looked a lot less impressive less than a week later. Boise State plays only one more team from a BCS conference, hosting Oregon State at Bronco Stadium on Sept. 25.

At least two voters in the Associated Press Top 25 poll were impressed by the Dukes. James Madison received 11 points in this week's AP poll, with Ray Ratto of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area and Jon Wilner of the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News including the Dukes on their ballots.

The AP changed its voting rules to include FCS teams after Appalachian State stunned Michigan three years ago.

Matthews doesn't care what others say about his team's monumental upset. He knows the Dukes were better than the Hokies, for one day at least.

"Their top 50 players are better than our top 50 players," Matthews said. "But when you get out there 11-on-11, we can play with anyone."

Mark Sanchez's new career

Reports are that Mark Sanchez realizes he sucks and that he is giving up the gridiron for the sand and becoming a lifeguard. In light of his play, it's probably a good move.

Sanchez sucks. Everyone talks about the Jets being a Super Bowl contender but they have no passing game. Yesterday, Sanchez threw for 74 yards! This is the NFL which stands for Not For Long with those kinds of numbers. Understand that Sanchez is only in his second year but yesterday he kept looking only at the checkdowns and that's it. If they truly are to be considered contenders, Sanchez will have to step up. I just don't think he can at this point in his career.

Aside from that, the Jets had WAY too many penalties. Perhaps Ryan's laid back, player friendly style is not instilling discipline with the players.

Whatever. The Pats are next for the Jets so no easy task coming up. Personally feel that the Jets are almost as overhyped as the Cowboys.

CEAFOD

Congrats to all for victories this past week in FF. Deepie hangs on for a one point victory as Robs dominates. Scott and JKSD have solid wins.

Good luck in Week 2.

Controversial Calvin Johnson play

Is it a catch?

Redskins beat Dallas!

Great win for the Skins! To be able to win our season opener, at home, in prime time on national tv, against the Cowboys, it was huge. A number of comments on the game in no particular order.

1. Defense was spectacular! I love how dynamic this defense is. There are a number of different looks with blitzing coming from all different angles. I love how aggressive and intense this group is.

2. D. Hall had a great game. He was good in coverage. He was physical making good tackles and his TD before halftime was all him. He stopped Choice, stripped him, and scored the TD.

3. LaRon Landry had a great game. 17 tackles last night and he was flying all over the place. He looks like a new player out there and is playing with attitude and control and at the position that is more natural for him.

4. Osakpo had a great game. Barring a few holds on him, he would have had a couple of sacks last night. He can be to the Redskins what DeMarcus Ware is for the Cowboys. He is a legitimate perennial Pro Bowler and is ideally suited for the 3-4 defense.

5. Doughty sucks. I like Reed and he has overachieved and to his defense is probably playing out of position but still the guy took some bad angles on runs and he took himself out of the play and he does not seem to be trusted in the passing game as he consistently is not able to recover in time to get back in position. We need Kareem Moore back ASAP.

6. Special teams was solid. Devin Thomas looks like a great kickoff returner. Punt/kickoff coverage was very good. Gano looks very solid. Bidwell blew it with the botched hold and then the short punt that set up the Cowboy TD.

7. McNabb had a very good game. He seems to understand the position better and more of a leader and knows when to pass or run. He had a number of passes dropped otherwise his numbers would have been better. I can think of 5 right off the top of my head (Armstrong's two in the end zone, Sellers two in the flat, and Moss's that hit him right in the hands/chest). I feel good with him in there.

8. O line was very good and I'll throw CP in there as well as he was phenomenal picking up blitzes. It's a tough defense to block and our guys did a great job. It will probably be one of their bigger tests this season and they came up big. Special kudos to Trent Williams who did very well against one of the league's premier DE/LB DeMarcus Ware. This is a vast improvement over last year.

9. Running game needs to get going. I expect this to pick up. Dallas was really crowding the line so it was hard to get a lane in there. Still, this is an area of improvement.

10. WRs need to step it up. Galloway started but doesn't look to be playing much. Seemed like he didn't play much of the second half at all (if any). Saw Moss and Armstrong and Roydell Anthony out there in the second half. Regardless, these guys need to catch the balls that are thrown to them.

11. Coaching was outstanding. Haslett did a great job with the defense. Shanny has brought a new attitude to this team. Last year, I was embarrassed to be a fan of the Redskins. I am sure the players were embarrassed at themselves and the organization. I have been saying it for months now that there seems to be a sense of order now that we have not seen in years. Thank God Cerrato is gone.

12. Rogers has got to catch the ball. The potential INT at the end of the game that was right in his hands has to be caught. When he missed it, I was thinking that Dallas is now going to come down and score. We had the opportunity to end it but he blew it and it will bite us in the end. Fortunately, we held on for the victory.

All in all, very happy with the win. As mentioned, at the beginning, there are a number of reasons to be happy. Don't think we won a divisional game at all last year so it was nice to take care of that with our first divisional game this year. Tough game next week against the Texans who are coming off of a big win against the Colts. Just have to find ways to get better each week.

HAIL SKINS!!!

JMU BEAT VT!!!!

HUGE win!!! Going into the game I was hoping we would keep the score to within 20 points. JMU is a good football team but we don't have the size or talent of VT. We had been outscored 90 to zero in our previous two meetings with Tech so I just wanted to keep it respectable.

The first half we didn't get anything going offensively. Our defense held up pretty well. We had good contain on Taylor and we held Tech's vaunted running game pretty well in check. Tech built a 10-0 lead deep into the second quarter. To that point, JMU had 1 first down the entire game and about 20 yards of total offense. All that changed on one play. We had a 3rd and 17 and we did a screen pass that our RB took 75+ yards to the house to make it a 10-7 game. Tech came down to score another FG before the half but I was VERY pleased to be at 13-7 at half time.

The second half was a totally different story. Our defense held up big time but our offense started really moving the ball. Dudzik was fantastic. He did a great job of managing the game and while he didn't throw much (although he seems to be pretty accurate to me when I have seen him), he kept the chains moving with great runs. Dudzik ended up scoring two TDs on two runs in the second half and we took a 21-16 lead midway through the fourth quarter. At that point, I was thinking to myself that I have been very entertained and I am very happy with being able to take a lead and even if we lose, I will be satisfied. As soon as that popped in my head, I said, no, we are so close, we have to win this thing.

Tech got the ball with over 8 minutes to go and marched down the field. Ryan Williams had a huge play on a 2nd and 7 at about our 40 where he took a safety valve pass and was closed in on by a JMU LB who was able to slow him down and who was holding on to him by his jersey as pursuit was closing in on him. Williams looked like he was going to take a loss but he spun free of the defender and ended up running across the field for like a 15 yard gain. The next play, Darren Evans ran for about 10 yards to inside our 20 yard line. The next play, Evans carried again but fumbled and JMU recovered.

At that point, there was still 5+ minutes left in the game but JMU did a good job of getting a couple of first downs to wind the clock down to about 20 seconds until we had to punt. There was a roughing the kicker call on our punt effectively ending the game.

JMU WINS 21-16!!! It is the biggest victory in JMU football history! Yes, we won the national championship back in 2004 but I still have to say that this was the biggest win for the program. It is only the second time in history that an FCS school has beaten a ranked FBS school. JMU has actually received votes this week in the FBS poll.

It's a great time to be a Duke!

Skins Prediction

It's Dallas week. If you can't get excited about playing Dallas at home in prime time on national tv in Week 1, you're a gaylord.

Can't wait for the game. It will be interesting to see what this new regime of the Redskins can do. The last few years the Redskins have pretty much embarrassed themselves, their fans, their families, and their ancestors when they have played on national tv. I do feel like that will change on Sunday.

The Cowboys are the most overhyped team in the NFL. They are decent but they aren't one of the strongest teams in the NFL. They have gotten a lot of buzz because they are the Cowboys and they got the new stadium and they make noise because of guys like Romo and Jerry Jones.

I actually feel like the Skins are going to pull this one out. The Cowboys have good skill position players in Austin, Witten, Bryant, Jones, and Barber but their O line is weak and even weaker considering they will be without two starters on Sunday. The Skins will take advantage of that and we will get to Romo a few times and I am convinced we will get at least two turnovers.

I think our running game will be decent and I think McNabb will play within himself and the system and do enough to pull out the victory.

Some keys to this game are:

1. Get to Romo. Attack him and get him beaten up, flustered, and prone to make mistakes.

2. Doughty will have to be better than he is. Doughty is a smart, strong hearted player but doesn't have the most talent/athleticism. He is going to need to make sure he gets to his assignments fast enough or else he is going to be exploited. The Ravens exploited his lack of speed on three consecutive plays in the preseason game once Moore was knocked out of the game. He will be someone that we need to watch.

3. Redskin WRs need to step up big time. Moss cannot drop balls. I have no idea what Galloway is capable of since he hardly played in the preseason. Armstrong is much like Doughty. He's got a huge heart but he isn't the most talented guy. We will really need to utilize Cooley and Davis. The problem is that I imagine these guys are going to be needed to stay back and help with protection.

4. Need to get the running game going. I believe CP is going to have a solid game. I think he is chomping at the bit to get out there and prove what he can do in this system.

5. Watch the Williams/Ware battle. I love what I have seen/heard of Trent Williams so far. I really believe he wants this challenge and will step up to it. Williams and Jamal Brown play with an edge to them as if they are the ones attacking as opposed to the DEs/LBs they are blocking. I love that attitude and I think they will do well.

6. I am assuming that Brandon Banks will be returning punts and possibly even kickoffs (although he is more suited as a PR). If that is the case, he needs to hold on to the ball. He can't get lost in the moment and needs to play within himself. Also, he needs to protect the ball. He is a little guy and the ball can get stripped away from him easily. We can't afford him giving the ball away.

7. Finally, and most importantly, our coaching is better than their coaching. I truly believe that Shanny and Co. will get our guys in position to win this game. As long as the players can execute, we will pull out this victory.

Looking forward to the game and showing the nation just exactly who the Dallas Cowboys are.

HAIL SKINS!!!!

Hey Grandpa Brett! It's over!

Very excited that the NFL regular season has gotten underway. Last night, in a repeat of last year's NFC Championship matchup, the Vikings visited New Orleans to take on the Saints. The Saints jumped out early and scored quickly on their opening drive where Brees picked up where he left off and hit multiple receivers with precision as he dissected the Viking defense for an opening TD.

The Vikings looked like they were going to commit to AP early on and they seemed to be holding Favre back a bit. When they finally let Favre throw, he looked every bit his 48 years of age. He looked sluggish and when he tried to fire the ball as only Brent could do, it was not on target. He threw another ill advised INT as he was about to get sacked and tried to get rid of the ball. I will say that his TD pass to Shiancoe was a very nice pass but other than that, he looked weathered and beaten and sluggish. Not really what you want to see in the first game of the season. I won't say he lost the game for the Vikings but he certainly didn't do anything to put them in a position to win it either.

Look, Brent Favre is one of the greatest QBs to play the game. I don't discount that. I will also say that he had a very good year last year after struggling in his one year with the Jets. However, I think what we saw from him last night is more typical of what we will see from him this year. The Vikings are not as good as they were last year and I don't know how committed Grandpa Brent is to playing.

I used to be a Favre fan. I loved his passion for the game but the last few seasons I just don't get it. The guy can't seem to make up his mind whether he wants to play or not and he expects the world to stop as he spends the entire offseason trying to figure it out. Once he decides to come back, he expects everything including $15M handed to him on a silver platter.

It's too bad because had he stayed retired when he originally retired (which seems like an eternity ago), he would have gone down as one of the most decorated, celebrated, beloved players in NFL history. What has happened now is that he has become a very polarizing and divisive character. He will most certainly be a HOFer in his first year of eligibility but had he stayed retired, that celebration in Canton would have been something to see. I could imagine the entire state of Wisconsin coming out to see him enshrined. Now, I am sure there are Packer fans that wouldn't even want to see him go in as a Packer.

Brent is entitled to do what he wants to do and that's what he has shown. Favre is all about Favre.

Vikings vs. Saints TONIGHT!!!!

Football season is officially here and the opening game is tonight. It's a rematch of last year's NFC Championship game. Wouldn't it be great if Favre threw another INT to lose the game?

I imagine Gregg Williams will have his guys go after Favre and try and sweep the leg. Favre was good last year but I don't expect him to have the same type of year. In fact, I expect him to get hurt and miss a few games this year.

Brees is on one of my fantasy teams so I am hoping for him to have a big game and hopefully connect on a few TDs to Colston. Double the points BABY!!!!

FRANKLY, I don't really care. I am just ecstatic about real football being back! I LOVE IT!!!

As a bonus, Caps open up their season in less than two weeks!!!

OH GOD!!!! I LOVE SPORTS!!!!

My fantasy teams

Upon a second look, I actually don't feel too bad about my teams. In reviewing both my teams and the projected points they are expected to score, I believe I have one of the highest totals in each of the leagues. Now I know that doesn't mean a whole lot but it makes me feel a little better because I thought I had drafted miserably and even the projected score would be low.

Critical to my success will be Ahmad Bradshaw. If he can become a solid producer, I have a good shot week to week. Jacobs has struggled with injuries and a falling out with the coaches and Bradshaw has been by far the more effective back. The question is if he is ready to carry the reigns as the featured back. Also, critical to my success is the San Diego WR Malcolm Floyd and/or Santana Moss. My WRs are fairly pedestrian so I will need one or both of these guys to step up if I am to be a championship caliber team.

The NFL regular season starts tomorrow night and I'm already getting a little softy working.

JMU romps!

DUDZIK IS BACK!!! He got hurt last year and the season was pretty much tanked after that. We were starting some athletic freshman who is more of a Tyrod Taylor type of QB and he just couldn't get us going. That young QB was a star at his high school in VA some where and was pretty heavily recruited but he was not ready. There was a controversy going into camp but most players seemed to want Dudzik.

Anyhoo, he is back and he had a good game as JMU had the score at 41-0 early in the third quarter. We dialed it back and the game finished 48-7 against Morehead State. Who is Morehead State? Heck if I know but it's a good early season victory against a lesser opponent. That's what good teams do to lesser opponents.

Next up VA Tech in Blacksburg. Should be a loo loo since Tech lost yesterday and no doubt will be angry and want to appease the students, alumni, coaches, and pollsters so they will want to run it up on us. We'll see how we hold up.

As a side note, congrats to UVA for their victory over Richmond. Started out slow but finished strong. I like their coach and expect UVA to improve over the coming years.

Tribe falls to UMASS,

GO DUKES!!!!

Yesterday's Draft results

Gotta say that I'm not really thrilled with my team. Outside of Drew Brees I feel like I have a fairly mediocre team with guys that may do great one week but suck the next. The problem is that I don't know when they will do well so I may be benching guys when they do well and playing guys that suck. Again, outside of Brees, I don't feel like I have any real consistent players.

I also made a couple of picks that left me cussing at the computer right after I made the picks because I saw better guys after the selection.

Whatever. It is what it is and I'll do the best I can with what I have.

Polamalu insures his hair for $1M

I suppose when you have hair like him and play the sport that you play where players are allowed to pull you down by your hair (as Larry Johnson did to Polamalu a couple of years back) it is necessary. Whatever.

Draft Day is here

Draft is tonight for the FF league. I have the last pick in the first round but am still confident I can put together a championship caliber team given my in depth GM type talents.

Tonight at 10 pm it's on like DONKEY KONG!!!
