CAA this week

The CAA is the premier conference in the FCS with a number of its teams ranked in the top 10. This week there are two stellar games with #3 ranked JMU hosting #5 ranked Delaware. Also, #7 ranked William and Mary hosting #1 ranked and reigning national champions Villanova.

What I love about JMU's schedule is it seems like each and every week we play a ranked opponent. Sure, it would be nice to have some softies on the schedule but instead of softies, we choose FBS opponents like VA Tech.

GO DUKES!!!

Will McNabb be cheered on jeered on Sunday?

Quarterback Donovan McNabb expects to receive a mostly warm reception Sunday from fans in Philadelphia when he faces his former team for the first time, he said in a radio interview Tuesday.

"Honestly, I think that I would be cheered. More cheered than booed," McNabb said during "The Donovan McNabb Show" on ESPN 980. "No matter what the situation is right now, that I'm with a different team and obviously it's kind of a rival, and it wasn't by my choice.

"But the whole deal about it was 11 years. It was a successful 11 years. And you had a lot of great times, a lot of great moments [and] a lot of exciting plays. Obviously, some down times, but you have that in the NFL. But there's more exciting things that happened in 11 years."

I have to believe that if the Eagle fans have even the slightest bit of class that they would cheer for McNabb in his return. The guy is the most prolific QB in their history and he did not leave by his choice. It will truly be a shame if they boo.

Devastating!

Skins lose yesterday to the Rams. The Rams are much improved but it's still a game we needed to win. Outside of the second quarter, it was pretty much an embarrassment. The first 7-8 minutes were atrocious. We just weren't ready to play.

The Rams first TD was horrible. First, they marched it down the field with relative ease and then Steven Jackson breaks a 42 yarder with a TERRIBLE play by Kareem Moore. The guy flew up to meet Jackson but didn't break down and Jackson did a simple side step and Moore was out of the picture. Maybe Moore was just really excited to be back but still that is tackling 101 and it cost us big time.

Redskins have to punt on our first drive and Gano had to do the punting since Bidwell hurt himself in warmups and was crying off the field...literally. Gano's first punt was blocked setting up a short field for the Rams who took advantage and quickly jumped out to a 14 point lead.

Redskins next drive starts out okay but then Moss fumbles on a crossing route and turns it back over to the Rams. The Rams next play is an INT where Bradford threw it over the middle but Moore made a nice play to get the INT.

It was at this point that the Skins started looking good. We had nice runs and nice passes and were able to put up 13 points pretty quickly. Still, it was disappointing because we seem to be settling for FGs when we need TDs too often.

We had a great goal line stand before the half and were able to block the Rams short FG try sending us to halftime down 14-13 but all the momentum. We opened up the second half with a deep ball to Moss but again had to settle for a FG but took the lead 16-14. At that point, the game totally changed and we were dominated and lost 30-16.

Here are a couple of specifics:

1. What was CP doing on that long run when he just fell down? This is the NFL and you are a running back, you don't just slide like a QB! He is not afraid of contact as we have seen him lay down some heavy blocks but what was that?!!! Then he didn't seem to play too much after that so not sure what was going on there.

2. The deep ball to Galloway in the end zone was pass interference. Too bad.

3. We have got to find a secondary WR. Outside of Moss, there is no other threat.

4. I like Devin Thomas a a KR but would love to see him as a WR. He has the size and speed to be something decent. I understand there is a whole lot more than size and speed but we are not getting anything from anyone else so he certainly can't hurt if given the opportunity.

5. Defense was ATROCIOUS!!!! We could not stop the Rams the entire second half. I felt like the Rams offense was out there the entire second half and we never got the ball. It reminded me a lot of our defenses the last couple of years where when it was time for a stop, we just couldn't get it done. How many freaking times did Bradford do that short/quick pass or find the guy in the soft zone for positive yards? The thing that bothers me most about those plays is that I felt like we were truly outcoached. One of the biggest strengths I felt about our team was our coaching and I just felt like we were thoroughly outcoached there. I mean, you want to send pressure fine. Then you want guys playing off the receivers. Well, Bradford (a rookie) recognized it and wanted to get the ball out quickly and was able to complete because guys were playing off. Fine, it happens once or twice but eventually you think we would have figured it out. Nope. It happened all game. What is that about?!!!

Also, in the second half, it was clear that the Rams made defensive adjustments and started sending pressure on McNabb. We didn't adjust and we suffered. Have more help in protection. Keep a TE back or have a RB back to help out with blocking. Where was CP in the second half? He is a great blocker and excellent at picking up blitzes.

6. What happened to the running game? We were fairly effective with the run and we just seemed to abandon it. Kyle Shanny calls the plays and I have a feeling listening to Mike Shanny in post game conferences that he wants to run more but at the same time, he is doing the right thing by giving control to Kyle and not interfering with his job. Kyle is a young, smart guy and understands that in today's NFL you need to pass to win but that doesn't mean you ignore the run game particularly when you are having some success. I just felt like we should have mixed it up a little more.

Like I said, the worst part about yesterday was that we were dominated in the second half and I really felt like we were outcoached and that I feel is one of our biggest strengths so that is what I found to be most disappointing.

Next week, we go to Philly and take on a rejuvenated Michael Vick who is playing out of his mind and a tough Philly team. A win and we are right back on top of the NFC East. A loss and it will mount many more questions about the Redskins.

Skins prediction

After a tough loss last week in which we had the game won but found ways to lose, we head to St. Louis to face a much improved Rams team.

I fully expect to win this game and win by at least 10 points. The Rams are improved but we are still better. Here are the keys to the game:

1. Pressure Bradford. He has been impressive so far as a rookie but he is still a rookie. We need to attack him and force him to make mistakes. I expect to get at least 2 INTs.

2. Running game has got to get going. After releasing LJ, CP is the undisputed starter and needs to perform like it. The O line also needs to help by giving holes for him to run through. I believe this will happen this week as CP runs for 100 yards.

3. McNabb needs to continue his great play. There is no reason to think otherwise but he has quickly become a leader of this team and I love that we take the shots downfield.

In the end, the Rams will hold on tough for a little while but the Skins will win 27 to 13.

HAIL SKINS!!!

Brett Favre's Final Chance

Good article on Yahoo.

Brett Favre(notes) swears this is his final season in the NFL and based on his performance thus far – four picks, two losses, one touchdown, zero victories – it should be. He’s been terrible; looking every bit like a soon-to-be 41-year-old who skipped most of training camp and thought he could just wing it.

But applying absolutes to Favre or his career is dangerous. The same arrogance/confidence that can ruin him – overly daring passes, lack of practice – has also served as his escape route from trouble.

“If I sat here and told you that I knew exactly what we’re doing right now I’d be lying,” Favre told reporters Thursday. “A lot of work is left and it will be an ongoing process until we have our unit how we want to go about things and we’re not there yet.”

Favre should’ve taken part in the entire Vikings training camp rather than showing up more than halfway through. Hanging out in Hattiesburg, Miss. until the team begged, pleaded and even sent teammates to haul him back to the Twin Cities was a mistake. He needed to work on his game before the third preseason game.

The Vikings didn’t just accept Favre’s late arrival, it had spent a year-plus empowering him to the point where he felt entitled to it. So the franchise is as much to blame as the QB here. Two games into the regular season, the starter shouldn’t be wondering what the offense is doing. As a result, Favre says he’s pressing.

“It’s hard to be patient and try to get this puzzle pieced together, because we’re doing it as we play,” he said. “Next week, it could be different. The following week, it could be different. Who knows? We need to score points. I can play a lot better.”

There’s no going back to August. All the Vikings can do is count on their quarterback to figure it out while the season plays out. It makes the upcoming stretch critical if Favre personally, and the Vikings as a whole, are going to turn around this spiraling season.

On Sunday the Vikings host the Detroit Lions, a team currently on a 2-33 run, 0-18 when facing Favre on his home field and fresh off making Michael Vick(notes) look so good the Philadelphia Eagles blew up their entire master plan for the future.

This is the last chance to reset the season. If it doesn’t happen, if Favre is the same slowed, struggling mess and the Vikings’ offense follows suit then you can write Favre’s final year off. After the bye comes a murderers’ row of at New York Jets, Dallas Cowboys, at Green Bay and at New England. By the end of that, it’ll be too late.

It’s now or never for the last stand of Brett Favre.

My take is that it is over for Brett. He is going to continue to be terrible as the Vikings struggle and he will regret coming back as he further mars his already tarnished legacy.

Another question...

How many batteries does it take to beat VA Tech?

Question

When you go to a Japanese Steakhouse, does anyone really enjoy at the end of the cooking when the chef chops up a shrimp and tosses it at you so that you can catch it in your mouth?
